Marvel fans are calling Captain America star Chris Evans out for denying he’ll appear in Avengers: Doomsday. His return was first reported shortly after the confirmation that Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe—except not as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom.
In a recent interview, Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie expressed his surprise at his long-time costar’s return to the MCU. The actor, who is good friends with Evans, relayed the story of how he discovered his rumored reprisal of the Steve Rogers role: “I learned that right there. My manager showed me. He’s like, ‘Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.’ That’s all I know. I haven’t seen a script.”
Responding to the rumors, Evans stated: “That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it… Yeah, no—happily retired!” Despite the actor’s protests, fans were not exactly convinced he was being truthful. In particular, users over on X had a lot to say about Evans’ denial of the Avengers: Doomsday reports.

User @wandasattorney tweeted a video of Evans’ cameo as Johnny Storm in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine with the caption: “‘happily retired!’ B*tch, you were just in a marvel movie not even 6 months ago?” Likewise, @fuvk__off wrote “always remember” alongside a screensH๏τ of Andrew Garfield denying his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home in an interview. Other memorable reactions include a meme of Shaquille O’Neal saying “You can’t fool me. I am familiar with your game.” and a gif of Seong Gi-hun exclaiming “I’ve played these games before!” in Squid Game season 2.
What The Marvel Fan Reactions To Chris Evans’ Avengers: Doomsday Comments Mean
After years of MCU stars misdirecting fans, their reluctance to accept Evans’ denial at face value isn’t without merit. The aforementioned reactions barely scratch the surface of how vocal the MCU fanbase is regarding whether Evans will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. His casting was reported by The Wrap, which is a fairly reputable source, potentially lending credence to Evans featuring in the film.
As some of the reactions referenced, Garfield also said point-blank that he was not going to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, before reprising the role of Spider-Man/Peter Parker for not just a cameo, but an essential supporting role. Garfield’s denial sets the precedent for Marvel actors to lie in order to hide surprises from fans. Moreover, most actors in major studio films have nondisclosure agreements; Evans may not be at liberty to discuss his casting.
Our Take On The Marvel Fan Reactions To Chris Evans’ Avengers: Doomsday Comments
At this stage, Evans’ return to the MCU seems inevitable. He and Downey are the two biggest stars in the franchise, so it would make sense to have them appear together. Moreover, Evans’ appearance in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine was a wonderful surprise; one that signals a potential willingness to appear in superhero projects. It could be that Evans will not return to his role permanently or that he will play a variant of Captain America, meaning he’s still retired his original iteration of the character. Regardless, it will be more of a surprise if Evans doesn’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday.
