Mufasa: The Lion King is the first prequel to the live-action The Lion King remake, but the franchise needs another prequel after it ignored this key part of Scar’s backstory. One of the main stories in Mufasa: The Lion King has to do with how Scar became a villain, with the film showing the iconic character’s antagonistic transition. However, Mufasa: The Lion King forgot to cover one of the most essential parts of Scar’s story, and it needs another prequel to fix this.

Although Mufasa and Taka start out as friends, Mufasa: The Lion King chronicles their falling out, leading to Scar becoming the franchise’s main villain. Mufasa: The Lion King ends with Scar becoming an outcast in the Pride Lands, but it forgets to tell the story of these other outcasts.

Although Mufasa: The Lion King explains nearly every other detail of his backstory, the prequel forgets to tell Scar’s story of how he met the hyenas. In the original The Lion King story, the hyenas are Scar’s lackeys, with them doing his bidding in exchange for food. Scar’s manipulation of the hyenas is key to his overthrow of Mufasa, with the hyenas then becoming Scar’s army upon his ascension to the throne.

By the end of Mufasa: The Lion King, Scar doesn’t interact with the hyenas at all in the film. This is surprising, as such an odd detail about Scar’s life seems ripe for exploration in a prequel. While Mufasa: The Lion King answered other questions that didn’t need to be answered, it leaves this topic completely untouched, which was an incredibly odd choice.

Scar’s Connection To The Hyenas Proves Another The Lion King Prequel Is Needed

To Explain How He Met Them

Since Scar’s connection to the hyenas was never explored, another prequel is needed after Mufasa: The Lion King. By the time the story of The Lion King rolls around, Scar has fully prepared his plan to kill Mufasa and Simba before ascending to the throne. By the end of Mufasa: The Lion King, however, it doesn’t seem believable that Scar would want to kill Mufasa, and it really doesn’t seem like he has the power to do it.

Another The Lion King prequel could explore Scar’s treatment in the Pride Lands, showing how he is driven to kill his brother. Scar’s plan to befriend and manipulate the hyenas would be a key part of this, properly setting up the original story. This seems like the best way to make up for this glaring Mufasa: The Lion King omission.
