DreamWorks Just Confirmed The Wild Robot Is Already One Of Its Biggest Franchises With A Major Change

DreamWorks’ The Wild Robot is the studio’s latest smash hit, having seen mᴀssive success both at the box office and among audiences. The Wild Robot, which has gotten great reviews on its way to critical acclaim, has garnered a plethora of nominations and wins throughout the 2025 awards season, including securing a spot among the Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature. Other nominees include Flow, Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Despite releasing less than a year ago, The Wild Robot is already cementing itself as a key piece of the DreamWorks puzzle, with robot protagonist Rozzum 7134 (Lupita Nyong’o), better known as Roz, joining the ranks of characters from other iconic DreamWorks franchises. The caring robot is a well-rounded, beautifully animated character whose time among an island’s animal community touched audiences across the world. Now, Roz has received one of DreamWorks’ highest honors just four months after The Wild Robot hit digital and VOD.

Roz Makes an Appearance Alongside Other DreamWorks Icons

DreamWorks Animation opens its movies with a montage of characters from iconic franchises such as Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar. This specific curtain raiser debuted in 2022, but has already been updated only one month into 2025. Now, the opening sequence, as seen in DreamsWorks’ latest feature, Dog Man, includes Roz from The Wild Robot.

Roz is now the first character to appear in the DreamWorks opening sequence, replacing the crafty animal crew from The Bad Guys, her prominent placement indicative of how important DreamWorks views the movie for its future plans. Voiced by Lupita Nyong’o, Roz boasts a lovable nature and unique character design, making her a great addition to the engaging introduction.

The Wild Robot is worthy of its place among the DreamWorks greats. This year, The Wild Robot could join the ranks of two other DreamWorks’ pictures, Shrek and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, as an Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature. As of now, The Wild Robot is a major Oscar contender in animation, given that it also has nominations in the Best Original Song and Best Sound categories. Its fiercest compeтιтion is Flow, a feature centered on a rag-tag group of animals navigating a fierce storm.

The Wild Robot was a major box office success, ranking as the sixth-highest-grossing animated film of the year after bringing in $325 million globally.

The Wild Robot is based on a series of novels by author and illustrator Peter Brown. The trilogy’s second installation is The Wild Robot Escapes, and an animated movie sequel is already in the works. Chris Sanders, the filmmaker behind The Wild Robot, confirmed to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline that there are “absolutely plans” for a sequel to the $325 million-grossing movie.

Given that a sequel is in development, The Wild Robot is shaping up not to be a one-hit wonder, but a real addition to the DreamWorks universe. No further details have been released concerning an adaption of The Wild Robot Escapes, but it’s fair to ᴀssume that it will pick up where the first film ended. The Wild Robot concludes with Roz leaving the island, promising to return, and going back to her home at Universal Dynamics. Based upon the тιтle—and the events of The Wild Robot Escapes novel—Roz will presumably attempt an escape out of Universal Dynamics to return to the island from the first movie.
