The Community star Alison Brie (Annie Edison) reiterates that the movie is still a possibility despite a recent filming update. The upcoming film will be inspired by the classic show, which initially ran from 2009 to 2015. Unfortunately, NBC elected to cancel the series after just five seasons. It enjoyed one final season on Yahoo! Screen, a now-defunct service, before it came to an end with season 6, episode 13, “Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television.” The only true hope of a revival is through a Community movie, which has been in the early stages of development for over a decade.
In an interview with Collider, Brie explained that scheduling the production has been the most difficult issue. While “everybody wants to do it,” finding a time for every cast member to return has been challenging. She hopes that everyone should be available “later in the year,” but emphasized that she is “always hearing” that. Check out her quote below:
I don’t know. Obviously, everybody’s schedules are tricky, and maybe that’s the main thing. But I maintain an optimism. I’m always hearing, “Checking of avails.” So that’s always a good thing. “We’re checking new avails for later in the year.” We all love each other so much. Everybody wants to do it. So, there’s the willingness. I feel like that’s the first step is all of us just being like, “Let’s get the gang back together!” So, your guess is as good as mine.
What The Update Means For The Community Movie
Scheduling Remains The Biggest Issue
It is no great surprise that scheduling continues to plague this movie since many of its stars have gone on to become well-known faces in Hollywood. Joel McHale (Jeff Winger) is poised to star in Scream 7 (2026), Gillian Jacobs (Britta Perry) has taken a recurring role in The Bear, and Donald Glover (Troy Barnes) is a force unto himself. Glover starred in The Lion King (2019), Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), all while balancing life as the musician, Childish Gambino.
Merely finding time to fit all of these extraordinary actors into one space is an extreme challenge. The Community movie entered development in 2014 and remains in limbo 11 years later. Because the stars have expressed interest in returning, it is only a matter of time until their schedules coincide. Until then, unfortunately, Brie and the other cast members will continue to await their return. After the official announcement came in 2022, however, it appears that the reunion is closer than ever.
Our Take On The Community Movie’s Scheduling
It Will Happen, But When?
There is little doubt that the movie will happen. Every major Community cast member who was still involved with the show in its finale is expected to return. Glover has described the new movie as “a college reunion,” and Ken Jeong confirmed that “There is a script, there is a plan.” With so many voices confirming that the movie is coming, the only question is when.
Chevy Chase’s Pierce Hawthorne was killed in season 4 and is unlikely to return for the movie.
This is an expansive cast, but the producers should be able to set a production date that can satisfy everyone by planning it years in the future. Because this began in 2022, production could very well be coming this year or sometime in 2026. The Community movie seems to have finally escaped limbo, but the coming months will see just how long the pre-production period will last. Either way, knowing that a return is on the horizon is a much-needed relief.
