Insidious 6: Release Date & Everything We Know

Following the surprise success of The Red Door, the Insidious franchise continues to grow with the announcement of Insidious 6. Horror director James Wan had another hit on his hands when Insidious was released in 2011, introducing the world to the Lambert family, and the spirits that haunt them. While the third and fourth movies branched outside the Lamberts, Insidious: The Red Door returned to their family and offered a note of finality as the family finally moved on from the terror.

Ultimately, the two threads that have connected all the Insidious movies together have been demonologist and paranormal investigator Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) and the Further itself. The Further is what Elise refers to as the spiritual realm, which is full of dastardly ghosts and ghouls that seek to possess the bodies of humans that are unfortunate enough to go wandering there. Despite the conclusiveness of the last installment, evil never truly dies and Insidious 6 has officially been announced.

Even though the movie has been on the release schedule for quite some time, the latest news confirms that the release date for Insidious 6 has been moved. Originally slated to hit theaters on August 29, 2025, Sony Pictures has now opted to push Insidious 6 to August 21, 2026, nearly a year later. Though no explicit reason for the change has been provided, Sony has now slotted Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming adaptation of Caught Stealing in Insidious 6‘s original spot.

Caught Stealing stars Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, and Liev Schreiber, and is adapted from the eponymous novel by Charlie Huston.

Though Insidious: The Red Door was supposed to end the story, the overwhelming financial success of the franchise necessitated a sequel. Now, Sony Pictures has announced that Insidious 6 is officially in the works that will be a different film from Thread: An Insidious Tale that is currently still in development as well. Nothing is known about Insidious 6, but it is already shaping up to be a blockbuster hit like its predecessors.

Insidious: The Red Door premiered on July 5, 2023.

The only thing that is known about the horror sequel is that it will conclude the mainline series of films. Though The Red Door was clearly supposed to have a note of finality, Sony has decided to go to the well one last time and involve the original story that has carried the franchise since 2011. Thread seems to suggest that the series will carry on in spinoffs, but the larger plan for the Insidious universe hasn’t been revealed yet.

Along with the announcement that Insidious 6 was official, Sony Pictures also announced a release date for the sure-fire blockbuster. Coming more than two years after the debut of Insidious: The Red Door, the sixth installment in the mainline franchise is slated to arrive on August 21, 2026. It isn’t known how the release of the next sequel will affect the release date for Thread: An Insidious Tale and the spinoff hasn’t been scheduled yet. Insidious 6 was original scheduled to premiere in 2025, but lost its spot to Sony Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of Caught Stealing.

Insidious 6 Story Details

No Plot Details Have Been Revealed Yet

Despite announcing the sequel, nothing is known about the plot for Insidious 6. However, the answer may be found in the plot description given for Thread which branches out from the typical storyline of the Insidious franchise. The movie will see Kumail Nanjiani and Mandy Moore play a married couple who attempt to use a magic spell to travel back in time and prevent the untimely death of their young daughter. Of course, this is an Insidious movie, so their attempt will backfire and land them somewhere in the Further.

The story of Thread: An Insidious Tale is a departure from the norm, but the future of the Insidious franchise truly lies in its spinoffs. The Lambert family’s tale was enough to carry three movies, and Elise Rainier got her own stories with Insidious 3 and Insidious 4. Therefore, to keep the franchise moving, Leigh Whannell and James Wan have to branch out and tell more stories.

While keeping characters like Elise and Josh in the background would be a welcome move on Blumhouse’s part, an Insidious 6 story with the Lambert family isn’t necessary anymore and there are more chilling tales from the Further that could use due attention. This makes the story for the next movie completely open-ended, but the fact that it is part of the numbered sequence suggests it will have a more direct connection to the other movies than the aforementioned Thread: An Insidious Tale.
