Dog Man’s Captain Underpants Cameos Explained

Warning: Contains SPOILERS For Dog Man!DreamWorks’ 2025 animated movie Dog Man includes two surprise cameos, as Harold and George from Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie appear. Dog Man is DreamWorks’ movie adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s comics of the same name. The main story revolves around Dog Man trying to capture Petey before he can take over the world, but both of their plans take unexpected turns with the arrival of Lil Petey, a child clone of Petey. Ultimately, Dog Man, Petey, and Lil Petey team up to stop Flippy before Ohkay City is completely destroyed as audiences watch Dog Man.

Dog Man captures the same type of child humor and action as the comics. It should feel familiar to audiences who watched Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which DreamWorks released in 2017. That movie followed Harold and George as middle schoolers as they accidentally turn their principal into Captain Underpants from their comic. The similarities are not accidental as Dog Man is a secret Captain Underpants sequel. That opened the door for connections to exist between them, and Dog Man‘s ending delivers in that department.

Captain Underpants’ Harold & George Cameo In Dog Man’s Ending

The Main Characters From Captain Underpants Are Seen

Harold and George in Captain Underpants

Fans of Captain Underpants will be pleased to see Harold and George appear in Dog Man, although their roles are brief. The two characters are seen sitting on a bench during the third act. Harold says that he can see his house from there, while George does not say anything in response. The visual similarities between the two kids sitting on the bench made it evident that these characters were meant to be Harold and George. Thankfully, Dog Man‘s credits confirm that this is the case.

While Thomas Middleditch and Kevin Hart were responsible for headlining the Captain Underpants cast, Harold is recast for the Dog Man cameo. Kelly Stables is credited as the voice of Harold, but there is no actor credited as George in Dog Man‘s cast. It’s unconfirmed if Middleditch was asked to reprise his role for the cameo in Dog Man or if the film simply decided to recast the part due to how small of an appearance it was. Since Dog Man and Captain Underpants come from different studios, the recasting could have been contractually based.

Why Harold & George Have Cameos In Dog Man

They Have A Meta Connection

The appear of Harold and George in Dog Man is the direct result of the characters’ connection to the half-dog/half-man cop. Dog Man is a spinoff that exists within the Captain Underpants universe as far as the comics are concerned. This means that Harold and George are technically the creators of Dog Man, Petey, and the other characters in the fictional universe. Dog Man including them as cameos is a way to acknowledge that they are responsible for this story, in a way.

This is a different way for Harold and George to be in Dog Man compared to Captain Underpants. The latter acted as a movie focused on Harold and George where their comics were just comics and the characters were not fully real – until they became real later on. Dog Man seemingly exists in a separate fictional universe. Dog Man and his friends do not actually exist in Harold and George’s reality as shown in Captain Underpants. This is simply a meta way for Dog Man to reference them.
