The release date for Austin Butler’s upcoming crime thriller film Caught Stealing has officially been revealed. Caught Stealing is based on the novel of the same name by author Charlie Huston, and will be directed by Darren Aronofsky. The plot follows a former baseball player who enters the criminal world of New York in the 1990s. In addition to Butler, the cast of Caught Stealing includes Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith, Liev Schrieber, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Bad Bunny.
Sony Pictures has revealed that Caught Stealing will be released in theaters on August 29, 2025. Caught Stealing only wrapped filming in late 2024, so its upcoming late summer release date comes relatively soon after. Butler’s last movie to be released in theaters was 2024’s The Bikeriders, in which he played an outlaw biker.
What Caught Stealing’s Release Date Means For The Film
Caught Stealing Could Be One Of 2025’s Best Movies
Caught Stealing’s release date suggests that filming went quite smoothly on the upcoming Aronofsky movie. Aronsofky is a veteran director who has helmed films such as Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan. His most recent movie, The Whale, earned Brendan Fraser an Academy Award for Best Actor. Therefore, there’s a chance that Butler could receive similar awards buzz for Caught Stealing after its release.
Austin Butler’s best movies include Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Elvis, and last year’s Dune: Part Two. The Bikeriders proved that Butler perfectly plays the brooding criminal archetype. While Butler likely won’t be quite as brooding in Caught Stealing, the story of the film will see him on the run from NYPD officers. Huston has written three books in his Hank Thompson series. Caught Stealing was followed up by Six Bad Things and A Dangerous Man. However, it’s currently unknown if the upcoming Caught Stealing film adaptation will lead to any sequels.
