Showrunner Jeff Trammell weighs in on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man star Hudson Thames’ recent controversial comments about the MCU show. One day before the animated series’ release, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man actor Hudson Thames commented on his original expectations for the series. Thames revealed he was wary about the show’s tone, saying, “my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t, and I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real”. Thames’ comments received backlash online.
Shortly after the show’s two-episode premiere, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man showrunner Jeff Trammell addressed Hudson Thames’ comments in a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” thread on the r/MarvelStudios subreddit. Trammell was asked why Hudson Thames was afraid that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was going to be “woke,” to which Trammell responded that he believes Thames “misspoke.” Trammell dismisses the controversy and instead focuses on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s noteworthy qualities. Read Trammell’s full response:
“Ha, I love Hudson and didn’t focus too much on what he said. I believe he simply misspoke, and I know that’s been weighing on him. I think we made a fantastic show that is going to appeal to a wide audience and hopefully captures what I love about this Spider-Man: that he’s a guy who cares deeply about the people around him and always tries to do the right thing.”

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Showrunner Jeff Trammell Gives Hudson Thames The Benefit Of The Doubt
Jeff Trammell mentions that Hudson Thames “misspoke”, and that his comments have been “weighing on him.” As of Trammell’s response on his Reddit AMA post, Hudson hasn’t addressed his controversial comments yet. However, Thames’ comments warrant the benefit of the doubt. So far, no other member of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s cast has provided their opinion on Thames’ comments.
Our Take On Jeff Trammell’s Response To Hudson Thames’ Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Comments
Hudson Thames’ Controversial Comments Shouldn’t Overshadow Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Hudson Thames’ comments may have been insensitive or poorly worded, but they shouldn’t take attention away from Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s remarkable two-episode premiere. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man introduces a brand-new Marvel timeline full of new and old MCU characters, complemented by an energetic soundtrack and a bold animation style. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man debuted to a 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, which reflects the show’s quality. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s audience reviews are considerably less positive, but online reactions to the show are promising for future episodes’ reception.
Diversity is one of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s standout qualities. Taking an alternate approach to Peter Parker’s superhero origin story, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man introduces new versions of characters who haven’t had the chance to appear in the MCU’s main timeline as Earth-616-born characters. In this universe, Peter Parker befriends Nico Minoru before he meets MJ, finds a mentor figure in Colman Domingo’s Norman Osborn instead of Tony Stark, and meets new variants of classic characters like a female Dr. Connors, who may or may not eventually transform into the Lizard.
