Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Adds Another Oppenheimer Star To Its Stacked Cast

The all-star roster of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey continues to grow as another Oppenheimer star joins the cast. The film will be based on the Greek epic by Homer, and it immediately garnered buzz not only because of Nolan’s involvement, but also due to its buzzy cast. Still wrapped in secrecy, The Odyssey has so far teased that it will be an epic and mythic action movie sH๏τ across the world with new IMAX technology. So far, it will star Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Oppenheimer star Benny Safdie has joined the already-stacked cast of Nolan’s The Odyssey. Safdie appeared in the Best Picture-winning Oppenheimer as scientist Edward Teller, and it was considered as one of his biggest roles yet. However, he is also known for his writing and directing roles in projects such as the Showtime and A24 series The Curse, which he starred in, co-wrote, and co-created, and the A24 films Good Time and Uncut Gems, which he directed with his brother Josh Safdie.

Safdie has chosen and landed roles that have given him the opportunity to work with reputable actors and filmmakers. On the acting side, he recently completed production on Happy Gilmore 2, continuing his collaboration with Adam Sandler after Uncut Gems. Many feel Uncut Gems yielded Sandler’s best performance yet. In Safdie’s solo directorial debut, A24’s upcoming The Smashing Machine, he worked with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. In 2021, he worked with Paul Thomas Anderson by starring in Licorice Pizza.

With his familiarity with Nolan, there’s little doubt that Safdie will be utilized well in The Odyssey, as Safdie’s proved himself as an actor capable of wearing a diverse array of hats.

All of these collaborations, including his work with Nolan, will have no doubt sparked exponential growth in his creative potential and pursuits, which has been evident since as early as 2009 with his co-directorial effort with his brother on Daddy Longlegs. With his familiarity with Nolan and his movies, there’s little doubt that Safdie will be utilized well in The Odyssey, as Safdie’s proved himself as an actor capable of wearing a diverse array of hats.

Our Take On This Casting Odyssey Announcement

Benny Safdie Is A Promising Addition

While Safdie isn’t necessarily a household name yet, this new collaboration with Nolan and the all-star Odyssey cast rallied behind him could, depending on his role, propel him further toward that tier of actors. As a director himself, I wouldn’t be surprised if Safdie, as he probably did during Oppenheimer, took the chance to take first-hand notes from Nolan, further elevating his craft. Safdie’s role in The Odyssey will probably be veiled in shadow until months before the film’s release, but I’m excited not only to see who he plays, but how this collaboration will affect his creative process.
