Benedict Cumberbatch has shared interesting comments about Doctor Strange’s role in Avengers: Doomsday. With filming set to begin in a few months, Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast has been receiving new confirmations since the end of 2024. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will see the return of stars like Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Hayley Atwell for what could be the best Avengers movie so far. However, Cumberbatch said in a recent interview that Doctor Strange would not be in the film, changing his original comments about being excited about starting production. Now, Cumberbatch has changed his answer again.
Speaking with Business Insider, Benedict Cumberbatch seemingly confirmed that Doctor Strange will be in Avengers: Doomsday after all. Previously, the actor said that his Marvel character would only appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, where he would have a central role. According to the actor, Doctor Strange did not make sense for the story of the next Avengers film. However, he might have misspoken. According to Cumberbatch, he was wrong, and Doctor Strange does have a role to play in Avengers: Doomsday‘s story. Check out the full quote below:
“I got that wrong, I am in the next one… Don’t ever believe anything I say.”

The Next Avengers Movie Shifts Again
Doctor Strange’s Avengers: Doomsday casting saga is quite interesting. When Cumberbatch revealed that he would not be in the next Avengers movie, the actor said that the move was related to “the character not aligning with this part of the story.” That does not sound like the kind of thing one would backtrack on just a week later. It is unlikely that Avengers: Doomsday‘s script changed in such a major way that a big character like Doctor Strange was suddenly put back into the script in such a short time.
Due to that, there is a chance that Cumberbatch is simply doing damage control. Doctor Strange could still be out of Avengers: Doomsday, but the actor is now trying to keep the mystery of the character’s situation. However, there is also another avenue of thought for Cumberbatch’s MCU comments. Doctor Strange might only appear in a post-credits scene in Avengers: Doomsday. This would be in line with the star’s comments about how the character did not align with the movie’s story but would have a big role in Avengers: Secret Wars. That way, Strange’s important future could be teased.

The Next Avengers Film Just Got More Exciting
I was disappointed when I heard Doctor Strange would not be in Avengers: Doomsday. Due to his multiverse experience and how well Strange bounced off other heroes in the last two Avengers movies, I hoped he would not only appear but also lead the team. With Benedict Cumberbatch now claiming that Strange will show up in the film despite what he previously said, I think my dream scenario for the character could still happen. That said, I don’t fully believe the actor just yet, and Doctor Strange only appearing in a post-credits scene in Avengers: Doomsday could very well happen.
