Mark Wahlberg’s 2022 Biographical Drama With 42% RT Score Becomes Global Netflix Success

Mark Wahlberg has been involved in a wide range of projects throughout his career. He had his breakout on-screen role in the Paul Thomas Anderson film Boogie Nights, wherein he played Dirk Diggler. A few years later, he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Departed. The actor has also been in other critically acclaimed movies, such as The Fighter, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, as well as All the Money in the World, which received critical acclaim.

Though there are many highlights in Wahlberg’s career, the actor has also been a part of a number of films that have not done nearly as well among critics. One such film is the 2022 comedy Me Time, which got only a 7% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. This was the actor’s only single-digit Rotten Tomatoes score, but he has gotten plenty of other Certified Rotten тιтles, including The Happening and two Transformers movies. Now, one of Wahlberg’s films with mixed reviews is doing well on streaming.

Father Stu Is On The Netflix Top 10

The Movie Got Mixed Reviews

Father Stu has become an international hit on Netflix. The 2022 movie chronicled the life of a boxer-turned-priest named Father Stuart Long, who attempts to counsel people during his own journey to redemption. In addition to Wahlberg, who plays the тιтular character, Father Stu features a leading cast including Mel Gibson, Jacki Weaver, Teresa Ruiz, and Aaron Moten. Father Stu received mixed reviews, getting only a 42% Tomatometer among critics.

Father Stu grossed $21.5 million worldwide at the time of its release.

Despite its mixed reviews, Father Stu is now a Netflix hit. According to Netflix, the film has now made it into the platform’s global top 10, taking the no. 4 position with 3.6 million views. The movie was in the top 10 in 21 countries this week, most of which were in Central and South America. Areas in which Father Stu made the top 10 include Brazil, Chile, Jamaica, and the Bahamas.

Our Take On Father Stu’s Netflix Success

The Audience Has Always Liked It More Than Critics

Mel Gibson looking serious in Father Stu

Ever since Father Stu was released, its audience has been its biggest champion. Despite the mixed reviews from critics, Father Stu boasts a 95% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, making it Verified H๏τ. This trend — wherein audiences like a film more than critics do — is fairly typical in religious-oriented films. One sees this with a movie like Sound of Freedom, wherein audiences gave the movie a 99% Tomatometer, but critics hated it. Rated R, Father Stu is not the most typical faith-based film, but its strong Christian messaging is likely what gives a lot of the appeal to viewers, helping the movie succeed.
