Legacy Horror Sequel That Made $166 Million At The Box Office Is A Netflix Hit Ahead Of Next Installment

Legacy horror films have become more commonplace in recent years. One such franchise is Halloween, which first got a same-name revival in 2018, which followed Laurie Strode as she confronted Michael Myers many years later. The David Gordon Green-directed horror movie was followed by Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, which further expanded upon Laurie’s plight against the masked villain. Kicking off exactly 40 years after the original John Carpenter Halloween, these films were able to carry out the legacy of the horror franchise while still providing new content.

The Halloween movies are far from the only legacy horror sequels out there. After taking on the Carpenter classic, Green tried his hand at The Exorcist, making The Exorcist: Believer in 2023. This film was largely panned and was considered a sloppy follow-up to the powerhouse original film. The Omen prequel The First Omen got better reviews in 2024, but slightly underperformed at the box office. One legacy horror sequel with a decent box office showing is now doing well on streaming.

Scream VI Is Doing Well On Netflix

Scream 7 Is On The Way

Scream VI is now doing well on Netflix. The legacy horror sequel continues Ghostface’s reign of terror, covering characters such as Tara (Jenna Ortega) and Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), who were introduced in 2022’s Scream. Even without the iconic Sidney Prescott actor Neve Campbell, Scream VI performed decently well in theaters. The movie made $166 million worldwide, easily profiting on its estimated $35 million budget. Since that film’s release, Scream 7 was announced, which is currently slated for release in 2026.

Now, Scream VI has become a top performer on Netflix. The horror film made it to the streamer’s top 10 in the United States, squeaking its way into the tenth spot. The movie joins a collection of top 10 films that include Back in Action, You Gotta Believe, Despicable Me 2, Despicable Me, H๏τel Translyvania 2, The Secret Life of Pets, Ad Vitam, The Boss Baby, and Trolls Band Together.

This Is Good For The Franchise

Scream VI‘s emergence in the Netflix top 10 is a good sign for the health of the franchise. Scream 7 may still be over a year away, but there has been frequent news about the project in the past several months. This included the announcement of Campbell’s official return and the casting of Joel McHale as Prescott’s husband in the film. The fact that Scream VI is now popping up on the Netflix chart shows that the franchise film’s press is working, compelling people to check out other franchise тιтles.
