Oh, The Places You’ll Go!: Release Date & Everything We Know

Warner Animation Group is set to bring the Dr. Seuss classic Oh, the Places You’ll Go! to the big screen, and there’s already a ton of exciting updates about the book-to-movie adaptation. First printed by Random House in 1990, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! was the last book published during Dr. Seuss’ lifetime. It’s one of the most beloved Dr. Seuss books ever penned and is a whimsical take on life’s ups and downs that’s full of sage advice delivered via the author’s trademark humorous verse.

There were a couple of attempts to adapt Dr. Seuss’ Oh, the Places You’ll Go! as a movie during the 1990s, with producer Ben Myron and The Killing Fields director Roland Joffé aiming for an animated musical version. The project languished in development hell for years but looked set for a revival in the late 1990s after Universal later secured the movie rights. That too fell by the wayside, but Warner Animation Group announced in 2020 it would bring an animated version of Oh, the Places You’ll Go! to the big screen with the help of J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot.

The Movie’s Release Date Is Revealed

Over half a year after the previous update concerning the Dr. Seuss movie, the latest news confirms the release date for Oh, the Places You’ll Go!. With Wicked director Jon M. Chu set to helm the project alongside Jill Culton (Abominable), the animated epic has taken the next big step when securing a release date for March 17, 2028. This date contradicts previous reports which aimed to have the movie out at some point in 2027. No reason has been given for the change, but an animated project of this magnitude certainly requires an extended production timeline.

Nothing is known yet about where the movie currently stands in its production timeline, though Warner Animation Group has already put the film on the calendar. Though it will be a long time before the movie actually arrives, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! is set to debut on March 17, 2028. Initially, Warner Animation had announced a release window of 2027, but no reason has been given for the change.

it’s entirely possible that Oh, the Places You’ll Go! will change its premiere at some point.

Animated movies often take much longer to produce than their live-action counterparts, and a lengthy production timeline isn’t all that surprising. Also, since the 2028 release date is still so far away, it’s entirely possible that Oh, the Places You’ll Go! will change its premiere at some point.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go! Story Details

An Open-Ended Premise

A kid wanders through a forest of striped and brightly colored balloon-like trees in Oh, the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss

past attempts to adapt Seuss’ work have often faltered when stepping outside the bounds of the source material, but only time will tell how Oh, the Places You’ll Go! will honor Seuss’ legacy.

Dr. Seuss’ book features an unnamed protagonist who leaves their town and travels through several weird and wonderful landscapes as a wise narrator ruminates on the adventures and challenges that life will throw their way. Exactly how that will translate into a feature-length movie is unknown, but Bad Robot’s Head of Motion Pictures, Hannah Minghella, is confident it can be done. During an interview with Vanity Fair, she stated:

“…we have an opportunity to make a movie that can be a wonderful complement to the book. It can follow Seuss’s lead and bring the world of the book to life beyond the page.”

With such an open-ended premise, the animated movie has the opportunity to go in any direction, and that will be contingent on the imagination of the film’s writer. However, past attempts to adapt Seuss’ work have often faltered when stepping outside the bounds of the source material, but only time will tell how Oh, the Places You’ll Go! will honor Seuss’ legacy.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go! Is Part Of A Dr. Seuss Cinematic Universe

A Cat In The Hat Movie Is Also On The Way

Back in 2018, Warner Animation Group formed a partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to bring a series of the author’s books to the big screen that will create a Dr. Seuss cinematic universe. Alongside Oh, The Places You’ll Go, the two companies will also oversee a new animated version of The Cat In The Hat and a spin-off movie based on its mischievous twin characters Thing One and Thing Two. The upcoming Cat in the Hat film has already landed stars like Bill Hader, but development on the Thing One and Thing Two movie remains unclear as yet.

The Cat in the Hat is currently scheduled for release on March 6, 2026.

With the cast of Netflix’s Green Eggs and Ham being a star-studded affair, and The Cat in the Hat already shaping up the same way, it’s safe to ᴀssume that Oh, the Places You’ll Go! will be the same way. However, it’s unclear how all the pieces will fit together going forward. On the other hand, with such an open-ended premise, it wouldn’t be that difficult to squeeze the mischievous Cat and his Thing friends into the universe of Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and it could even serve as a bridge to other Seuss properties.
