“You Have To Be Willing For People To Sometimes Not Like It”: Lady Gaga Addresses Joker: Folie À Deux’s Box Office Failure

Lady Gaga has shared her thoughts on Joker: Folie à Deux‘s negative reception. 2019’s Joker became one of the most successful superhero movies ever. It held the record of the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time until ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine surpᴀssed the DC movie last year, with Joaquin Phoenix also taking the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Arthur Fleck. However, Joker: Folie à Deux was a major box office failure, grossing only $207.5 million on a budget of around $200 million, not accounting for marketing costs. Now, one of the film’s stars has addressed the movie’s issues.

Speaking with ELLE UK, Lady Gaga revealed how she approaches Joker: Folie à Deux‘s failure. The “Harley Quinn” actress has a simple take on the Joker sequel not being among DC’s best movies. Gaga thinks that as an artist, you have to continue even though a particular project, like Joker: Folie à Deux, does not connect with audiences like the people making the movie wanted it to. She does not blame anyone for the movie’s failure, instead accepting that it is okay for fans to sometimes not enjoy projects. Check out the full quote below:

“People just sometimes don’t like some things. It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. You keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.”

What Lady Gaga’s Joker: Folie À Deux Comments Mean

The Actress Accepts The DC Movie’s Fate

Lady Gaga’s comments about Joker: Folie à Deux are professional yet candid. The actress does not go out of her way to defend the criticized project, but by saying that sometimes people do not connect with a project as it was intended, she does reaffirm that she believed in the story the movie set out to tell, but it was not positively received by fans. Instead of arguing against the general opinion that the movie was bad, Gaga shows that her stance is to accept the criticism and always move on.

Lady Gaga is the first major artist connected to Joker: Folie à Deux to comment on the DC movie’s failure. Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix and franchise director Todd Phillips have been blamed for the project’s lack of success in reports, but the duo has yet to comment on the film’s poor reception. By commenting on Joker: Folie à Deux‘s failure, Lady Gaga shows that she practices what she preaches about continuing if something does not work and accepting that audiences will not like everything you do. With Joker 3 not happening, Gaga can now fully move on from the franchise.

Our Take On Lady Gaga’s Joker: Folie À Deux Comments

Right Actress For The Character But The Wrong Story

When Lady Gaga was announced to play a version of Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, I was excited. However, the movie gave her little to do in what was mostly a dull affair with not nearly as many high points as Joker. I think Gaga’s comments are mature and show that she is not shutting herself to criticism like other actors have done in the past. However, Gaga is a brilliant actress with a successful career, and I think she is right to move on from Joker: Folie à Deux to better things without dwelling on its failure.
