Keira Knightley’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Criticisms Addressed By Orlando Bloom

Based on the popular Disney attraction of the same name, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been a mᴀssive hit for the company. The first movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, was released in 2003, introducing Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow to the world. Depp would reprise his role for all four sequels, the last of which was released in 2017. Since then, development has been ongoing for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, but the film has yet to get off the ground.

In addition to Depp, the core Pirates of the Caribbean cast features Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. Both characters are also introduced in The Curse of the Black Pearl, and both go on to appear in ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man’s Chest (2006) and At World’s End (2007) before seemingly departing the franchise. Both Bloom and Knightley would ultimately return for cameos in Pirates of the Caribbean: ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Men Tell No Tales.

Orlando Bloom Reacts To Keira Knightley’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Criticisms

The Elizabeth Swann Actor Recently Shared Candid Thoughts

Bloom reflects on his time in Pirates of the Caribbean and shares his thoughts regarding Knightley’s recent comments. In an interview with The Times in November 2024, Knightley spoke about the double-edged sword of being in Pirates of the Caribbean, saying that she was “seen as sh-t because of [those movies],” while also acknowledging that the films opened the door to future roles. Speaking to the LA Times, she also lamented that playing Swann meant losing her privacy, and that she endured stalking and “rape speak” from men while as young as 17 years old.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bloom looks back on his time in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, ultimately sharing a positive sentiment about the experience. That being said, he does say that he can see why Knightley expressed more mixed feelings. Check out his comment below:

“It was such a huge moment in time that is almost like… it feels almost like another lifetime now. But it certainly was unique and, you know, I’m always grateful. But I definitely understand where Keira was coming from, and she does wonderful things.… I have a lot of positive takeaways.”

What The Pirates Of The Caribbean Actors’ Comments Mean For The Franchise

Will Bloom Or Knightley Return For Another Movie?

Though the Pirates of the Caribbean: ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Men Tell No Tales ending and post-credits scene sets up a new storyline for Will and Elizabeth, teasing that Will perhaps hasn’t left his Davy Jones curse behind after all, it doesn’t seem likely that Knightley will be reprising her role, at least not for anything more substantial than a cameo. Bloom’s recent comments, however, suggest he might be more open to returning as Will in a more significant capacity.

The ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Men Tell No Tales post-credit scene features Will, now back on land with Elizabeth, having a nightmare about Davy Jones. After Will goes back to sleep, the camera reveals barnacles on the floor next to the bed.

While it seems inevitable that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 will happen eventually, there hasn’t been much movement on the project recently. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has expressed interest in getting Depp back as Jack Sparrow, but Depp, following his legal troubles, hasn’t starred in a major Hollywood movie since 2018. The future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may be a little unclear at the moment, but Bloom evidently looks back fondly on his experience in the films.
