1923’s Spencer Actor Joins New Modern-Day Wester Movie From Old Henry Director

1923 star Brandon Sklenar is set to lead an upcoming neo-Western movie, The Rescue. Sklenar is best known for his role as Spencer Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel series created by Taylor Sheridan. A World War I veteran and a big-game hunter in Africa, Spencer is a fierce protector of his family’s Montana ranch. Following the success of 1923, Sklenar’s reputation in the genre has only grown. The Rescue will also mark another major role in a feature-length project after Sklenar portrayed Atlas in the acclaimed drama It Ends With Us.

According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Sklenar is confirmed to star in The Rescue, a modern-day Western film from Old Henry director Potsy Ponciroli. While further plot details remain under wraps, the film is set to follow a rodeo cowboy when his skills are put to the test outside the stadium. The project boasts an impressive production team from Skydance, including David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, with Aimee Rivera overseeing the project for the studio. John Fusco wrote the screenplay.

What The 1923 Star’s Role In The Rescue Means

Sklenar And Ponciroli Saddle Up For A New Frontier

Sklenar’s casting in The Rescue highlights the ongoing resurgence of the Western genre in modern Hollywood, following the success of Taylor Sheridan’s award-winning streak of neo-Westerns. In 1923, Sklenar proved his ability to handle gritty, action-heavy material with a raw authenticity and vulnerability as the younger son of James and Margaret Dutton. Spencer’s relationship with Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) has since become a beloved addition to the series, as the newlywed couple fight to reunite back in Montana.

Ponciroli’s return to the genre after Old Henry in 2021 is noteworthy. The action drama earned widespread praise for its somber dive into the Wild West, earning a 94% critic score and 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. With a screenplay by Fusco, whose previous work includes Hidalgo and The Highwaymen, The Rescue certainly has the creative backing to bring compelling character development and thrilling action to another rugged, unforgiving ride along the American frontier.
