A hit Netflix original movie with a 96% Rotten Tomatoes rating has crashed onto the streamer’s top 10 charts almost seven years after its initial release. Since releasing its first piece of original content in 2013 with House of Cards, Netflix has continued to increase its output of in-house shows and movies from year to year. As of July 2023, Netflix Originals make up more than 50% of the platform’s content. The streamer has entered into high-profile deals with several big-name stars since then, such as Adam Sandler, Julia Roberts, and Will Smith.
In addition to producing successful original shows, such as Stranger Things and Wednesday, Netflix has also made a foray into international тιтles, seen most prominently with the release of Squid Game in 2021. The Korean show, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, received critical acclaim and became Netflix’s most-watched show ever. Squid Game season 3 will conclude the series in 2025. Netflix continues to develop both American and international тιтles, and one original movie in particular is enjoying a resurgence in popularity on the streaming platform.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Is A Streaming Success
Viewers Are Taking To The Teen Rom-Com
Directed by Susan Johnson and written by Sofia Alvarez, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is based on the novel of the same name by Jenny Han. Released on Netflix in August 2018, the movie follows high schooler Lara Jean (Lana Condor), whose life is thrown off-kilter after the love letters she secretly writes to boys she has a crush on are exposed. The movie was popular and successful upon its original release, and spawned two sequels, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, and To All the Boys: Always and Forever, as well as a spinoff TV series, XO, Kitty.
According to Netflix Tudum, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has debuted on the Top 10 Global Movies list for the week of January 20 through January 26. It came in at #6, clocking 3.1 million views and 5.2 million hours viewed, ranking on the Top 10 lists for 15 individual countries. The film has ranked above Minions: The Rise of Gru at #7, Despicable Me 2 at #8, Carry-On at #9, Knight and Day at #10. At the top of the list was the Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz action movie Back in Action.
Our Take On To All The Boys’ Spike in Popularity
The Release Of Other Shows Will Have Helped Enhance Popularity
Romantic comedies often tend to perform well on Netflix, as they are fairly easy to watch and come with a feel-good factor. However, I believe there are other factors that have helped improve To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before‘s performance on Netflix. First off, XO, Kitty season 2 was recently released, and its success will have prompted viewers to revisit the original film trilogy. Furthermore, Noah Centineo, who plays Peter, also stars in The Recruit season 2, which is set to release January 30. This could have also helped bring more viewers to watch To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
