Labyrinth 2: Confirmation, Robert Eggers’ Involvement & Everything We Know

Jim Henson’s 1986 film Labyrinth was one of the great cult classics of the decade, and now the fantasy story is returning in Labyrinth 2. The original film follows a young girl named Sarah who must enter the тιтular labyrinth to rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King Jareth. Perhaps best remembered for its catchy tunes provided by David Bowie, Labyrinth also blended Jim Henson’s amazing puppet prowess with the full imagination of the aforementioned filmmaker.

Like its predecessor The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth underperformed at the box office and was mostly met with confusion from critics in 1986. However, the film has since been reevaluated by academics and fans alike, and it quickly gained a cult following once it arrived on home video. Jim Henson’s other fantasy project, The Dark Crystal, was revived in the woefully short-lived series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix, and it made Labyrinth 2 seem much more possible. Now, the 1980s legacy sequel is in the works, and news concerning the Henson Studios film is finally coming in.

Robert Eggers Will Write & Direct The Sequel

Nearly a year after it was announced that the legacy sequel was in development, the latest news confirms that Robert Eggers will write and direct Labyrinth 2. The brilliant cinematic mind behind films like Nosferatu, The Lighthouse, and The Witch, Eggers is no stranger to bizarre worlds on film. Though many details, including the sequel’s official тιтle, are still unknown, it has been confirmed that Labyrinth 2 will be a sequel and not a remake of the ’80s cult classic.

As previously mentioned, Eggers will helm the sequel, and will also co-write the script with his creative partner, Sjón. Eggers is also working on the upcoming film, Werwulf (also with Sjón), but it’s unclear which project will come first. Christopher and Eleanor Columbus will co-produce alongside Jim Henson Company CEO, Lisa Henson, and Brian Henson will also serve as an executive producer on the movie.

Werwulf is set in 13th-century England and is scheduled to premiere in the US on Christmas Day 2026.

Labyrinth 2 Is Confirmed

The Sequel Has Been In Development For Quite Some Time

The first announcement regarding Labyrinth 2 came all the way back in 2014, and the highly-anticipated sequel has gone through various incarnations since then. Numerous script updates have conflicted with one another, and the movie was even seemingly canceled in late 2023 before being contradicted in early 2024. Though the project was in development for a decade, no significant progress was made before the January 2025 announcement that Robert Eggers would write and direct.

it will probably still be quite some time before the movie actually materializes, and Eggers is already busy on his upcoming Werwulf film.

Now that Eggers is attached to the project, it’s clear that Labyrinth 2 has taken the next big step, and a script should be coming sooner rather than later. Despite this fact, it will probably still be quite some time before the movie actually materializes, and Eggers is already busy on his upcoming Werwulf film. However, Eggers’ involvement also suggests that Labyrinth 2 isn’t merely another Hollywood cash-grab, and will actually be a labor of love for all involved.

Who Is Making Labyrinth 2?

Several Directors Have Been Attached Over The Years

Though the project is finally starting to take shape after years of development, various creatives have been attached to the movie over the years. Most recently, director Scott Derrickson signed on for Labyrinth 2, and he took the reins from Fede Álvarez, who was previously announced but dropped out in 2020. It is unclear why Derrickson dropped, but he announced that the project was shelved before Brian Henson contradicted him and confirmed that the movie was still in development in early 2024.

Now, Labyrinth 2 has seemingly taken the next big step in its development process with the hiring of Robert Eggers to write and direct the sequel. H๏τ off his success in 2024’s Nosferatu, Eggers has already positioned himself as one of the leading filmmakers of the 2020s, and the perfect brilliant mind to resurrect Jim Henson’s classic vision.

Labyrinth 2 Story Details

What Will Happen In The Sequel?

Much like everything else surrounding the troubled sequel, nothing is known about the plot of Labyrinth 2. When Fede Álvarez was still attached to direct, the Evil ᴅᴇᴀᴅ (2013) filmmaker made it clear that the biggest challenge was making the story commercially viable. With that in mind, it isn’t certain if Labyrinth 2 is envisioned as a pure sequel or if it will be more of a reboot.

The re-casting of David Bowie’s Jareth is perhaps the biggest hurdle for the film, and it’s highly unlikely that a filmmaker would attempt to replace the late rock legend. Instead, Labyrinth 2 will need to find some other corner of the fantasy universe to explore, perhaps even a prequel in the same vein as The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Until more details are revealed, it’s impossible to know exactly what will happen in the legacy sequel.

David Bowie pᴀssed away in 2016 after a battle with liver cancer.
