Tim Burton is a renowned director, but his remakes have been met with far more mixed success than his original films. Most notoriously, Burton directed a 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes. Though its 1968 counterpart was a classic by that point, Burton’s 2001 version was not nearly as well-received. The movie holds a rotten 43% among critics and an even worse 27% Popcornmeter from audiences. The movie still profitted, making $362.2 million worldwide on an estimated $100 million budget.
The reaction to Planet of the Apes did not stop Burton from venturing into the world of remakes and adaptation. In fact, it did not even stop the director from making poorly-received adaptations, as his 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland also got only a 50% Tomatometer, and 2019’s Dumbo got an even worse 46%. Burton has partially redeemed himself with the Addams Family spinoff show Wednesday, but still has a mixed track record when it comes to adaptations and remakes. Now, one of the director’s most divisive remakes has become a streaming hit.
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Has The Golden Ticket On Streaming
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Divided Audiences
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is now a streaming success. Based on the 1964 Roald Dahl children’s novel of the same name, Burton’s version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released in 2005. It came over 30 years after Gene Wilder charmed audiences with his version of the greatest chocolatier in Mel Stuart’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, this time subbing in Johnny Depp in the Wilder role. Though the greatest candymaker was also a sufficient moneymaker, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remains an incredibly divisive remake.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory‘s Rotten Tomatoes audience score is 51%.
Despite its divisive past, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has become a streaming success 20 years later. According to Max, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has squeaked its way onto the streamer’s Top 10 Movies in the U.S. Today (January 27), ᴀssuming the no. 10 spot. The film joins a streaming chart that includes Uncharted, A Different Man, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Your Monster, The Accountant, The Purge: Election Year, Morgan, and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.
Our Take On Charlie And The Chocolate Factory’s Streaming Success
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Has Always Outperformed Its Mixed Reviews
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory‘s streaming success adds an interesting layer to its reception. Neither the hate towards Depp’s Wonka performance nor other oft-loathed elements of the film have ever stopped audiences from watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After all, the film grossed $474.9 million on an estimated $150 million budget. The interest in the character also lingers through the popular 2023 film Wonka, further boosting the Burton film on its streaming journey two decades after the fact.
