2024 was a big year for the film franchise. The first quarter of the year started strong with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, which was released on March 1, 2024. Dune: Part Two would go on to make over $714 million worldwide, becoming the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2024. One week later, the animated franchise sequel Kung Fu Panda 4 was released in theaters, which also ended up in the top 10 highest-grossers of the year. The release calendar became littered with other moneymaking franchise тιтles, including Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Despicable Me 4.
Several of 2024’s franchise hits went on to become Oscar nominees. Though many were enraged at Villeneuve’s apparent snub for Best Director, Dune: Part Two was one such film, going on to be nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture. Inside Out 2, a Pixar sequel and 2024’s highest-grossing film, was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Now, another one of 2024’s franchise films that was recently nominated for an Oscar is doing well on streaming.

Our Take On The Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Streaming Success
This Is Good For The Franchise
The Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday, January 23 (after two delays), which may partially explain the increased interest in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Other Oscar-nominated movies have been doing well on their streaming platforms, even those with technical nominations only (e.g. A Different Man, which is nominated for Best Makeup & Hairstyling). Still, this delayed success is a good sign for the health of the franchise, which will return.
