Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio’s Next Movie Escapes Development Hell 15 Years After First Announcement

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s long-gestating Devil in the White City movie is being revived at a new studio. The project has been in development since 2010, when DiCaprio first bought the rights to the book, Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America. At one point, the project was envisioned as a Hulu limited series. The story revolves around the serial killer Dr. HH Holmes, who committed a series of murders while Chicago was hosting the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893.

Now, ᴅᴇᴀᴅline reports that Devil in the White City has landed at 20th Century Studios as a movie adaptation. Scorsese is in talks to direct, while DiCaprio is in talks to star. Both would produce the project, which currently has no script in place. After a meeting with 20th Century Studios’ executives, the consensus was that this is a story that will work best as a theatrical release, although no release date is yet attached to the upcoming movie.

What This Means For Devil In The White City

The Movie Is Moving Forward

After being at a standstill for years, Devil in the White City‘s development is finally moving forward. Scorsese and DiCaprio’s longtime interest and investment in the story is paying off as the filmmaker and actor are poised to lead the project. This is Devil in the White City‘s most promising development in years and a good sign that the long-awaited project will come to fruition, and in the storytelling format where Scorsese and DiCaprio are most well-versed.

Going from being a movie, a Hulu show, and now back to a movie is indicative of the larger changes within the entertainment industry since 2010. After the push to streaming, studios are largely pivoting back to theatrical releases, and Devil in the White City will be following suit. That being said, the latest DiCaprio and Scorsese movie is still in the early stages, as the director and actor are still in talks, and there is no script yet. It will likely be several years until the movie makes its theatrical debut.

Our Take On Devil In The White City

It Is Already A Highly Anticipated Movie

From The Departed to Killers of the Flower Moon, Dicaprio and Scorsese have consistently proven that they are one of the best duos in Hollywood. Devil in the White City should be another successful chapter in their longtime partnership. The cunning Dr. Holmes could become one of DiCaprio’s most memorable characters, while the overall project goes on to become one of Scorsese’s all-time best movies. Even with no script or release date attached, Devil in the White City is already one of the most anticipated movies in the coming years.
