Orphan 3 gets an update from Isabella Fuhrman. Orphan is a 2009 horror movie about a family who adopts a young girl named Esther who turns out to be more sinister than she initially appears. Fuhrman plays Esther in this film, amidst a supporting cast that includes Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, CCH Pounder, and Jimmy Bennett. Over a decade after Orphan was initially released, a prequel film тιтled Orphan: First Kill was put out in 2022, showing Esther impersonating a rich family’s missing daughter, years before the events of Orphan.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Fuhrman provides a positive status update on Orphan 3. According to the actor, she has “begun” work on the movie. She cites the film’s strong script as the reason that she will be returning for another Orphan film. She says “the script is so good” and notes how amazing it was to her that this was now a franchise, as it had only been planned as a one-off film when she signed on as a child actor. Check out the full quote from Fuhrman below:
I’ve begun. I’ve read the script, and while I don’t want to give anything away, it’s the only reason I would go back and do another one. When they first said, “We’re going to make another one,” I was like, “You guys are nuts!” But the script is so good. I was like, “OK! A hundred percent. This is a great idea, actually.” So I’m really excited for the fans of the franchise. It’s funny to even say that because it wasn’t a franchise when I signed onto it at nine years old. So I’m just really grateful that it has turned into something that is so much bigger.
What This Means For Orphan 3
Orphan 3 Was Confirmed In November
While this is the most optimistic progress about Orphan 3 yet, the project has been in the conversation for years. Orphan: First Kill director William Brent Bell said in 2022 that he would get behind a third Orphan movie if there were a “really cool script.” The next year, Bell confirmed that it was in active development, and then in November 2024, Orphan 3 was officially greenlit. Fuhrman will star in the movie with Bell directing and screenwriter David Coggeshall also returning.
In the case of both Bell and Fuhrman, their standards for returning were a quality script. Based on Fuhrman’s statement, it seems like she got just that, as the actor praises the “great idea” behind the movie’s story. Exactly what that idea is still remains a mystery, but Fuhrman’s statement is nonetheless heartening. Audiences liked Orphan: First Kill over a decade after the shocking first film, so it is conceivable that they could also get behind this third installment.
Our Take On Orphan 3’s Development Update
Orphan 3 Might Expand The Franchise Lore
By saying that the franchise has turned into something “much bigger,” Fuhrman could just mean the fact that it will now be, at the very least, a trilogy. But the actor also could mean that Orphan 3 has significantly expanded the lore behind the horror franchise rather than simply showing another murder story. If this is true, Orphan 3 could add a fascinating layer of depth to the existing foundation created by Orphan and Orphan: First Kill.
