Despite its major Marvel Cinematic Universe success in 2024, the Academy Awards just delivered some bad news for ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. As the 2025 Oscars season is approaching, numerous 2024 films are getting their due in various categories. However, one of the burning questions every year when Oscar nominations are rolling out is whether or not the superhero genre is getting recognized in any capacity, particularly from the MCU timeline.
The Oscars nominations were finally announced for the 97th Academy Awards, and while ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine was the only outing from Marvel Studios in 2024, the Phase 5 installment ended up not landing a single nomination. In the category of Visual Effects, which is the one that ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine were expected to land in, the following films were instead nominated:
- Alien: Romulus
- Better Man
- Dune: Part Two
- The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
- Wicked
What ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine’s Oscar White Out Means
When it comes to Marvel Studios, they tend to usually land a handful of nominations every year in the technical categories, especially for Visual Effects. However, with ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine officially being left out of the Oscars for 2025, it marks the first time in a decade that Marvel Studios has not been nominated for a single category. The last time this happened for Marvel Studios was in 2015, during the MCU’s Phase 2 era.
While Marvel Studios technically didn’t get any Academy Award nominations in 2021, this was a result of the fact that they didn’t have any releases in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In many ways, it is surprising that ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine didn’t get a nomination for Visual Effects, especially given how strong the VFX work was for the 2024 installment. Throughout the film, all the way to the ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine ending, the MCU had some of its best VFX in quite a while, following numerous films having been slammed for some of their rushed post-production work. This is especially true given the movie featured characters like Cᴀssandra Nova, whose power set brought some of the MCU’s most disturbing but well-executed sequences of all time.
Our Take On ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Getting No Oscar Nominations
While it’s sad to see all the work that was put into the ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine characters and story not be recognized by the Academy Awards, it doesn’t take away any of the MCU film’s mᴀssive win in 2024 as both a critical and commercial success for Marvel Studios. In the end, with the amount of movies that get released on a yearly basis, it will always be extremely compeтιтive at the awards. Nevertheless, the MCU audience will always be able to relive the great adventures in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine and its many solid aspects, including its visual effects.
