The MCU Breaks A 10-Year Franchise Record With ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Oscars Snub

The MCU‘s Oscar nomination record comes to an end in 2025 despite ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s popularity. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and Wolverine’s MCU introduction has been one of the most anticipated events in the whole MCU, and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s box office results prove it. In 2024, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine claimed the seventh spot in the list of highest-grossing Marvel movies of all time, only surpᴀssed by Black Panther, Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Avengers, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Not every box office hit is equally lauded critically. For instance, Avengers: Age of Ultron remains at the twenty-seventh spot in Rotten Tomatoes‘ MCU rankings by Critics Score while Iron Man — only the eighth highest-grossing movie of 2008 — holds the third spot seventeen years after its release. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s critical reception wasn’t too dissimilar to its box office success, but it missed a Marvel tradition that the MCU had maintained for a decade.

The MCU’s 10-Year Franchise Record Of Oscar Nominations Explained

Marvel Studios Got At Least 1 VFX Academy Award Nomination Every Year Since 2017

Superhero movies usually don’t get nominated for Academy Awards outside the visual effects category, but Marvel Studios earned at least one Oscar nomination for VFX since 2017. In order, 2016’s Doctor Strange, 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home, 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 upheld this tradition. Marvel didn’t get any nomination in 2020 because all releases were delayed that year.

Marvel Studios didn’t get any VFX Oscar nomination in 2015, which saw the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. Before that, Marvel got three VFX nominations in a row: The Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Neither 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger nor Thor get a nomination, and Marvel didn’t release any movie in 2009. Otherwise, Iron Man and Iron Man 2 also got VFX nominations at the very start of the MCU.’s Phase 1.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Has Plenty Of Compeтιтion At The 2025 Academy Awards

The 2025 Academy Awards nominations for best visual effects include Alien: Romulus, Better Man, Dune: Part 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and Wicked. All of these 2024 movies have a very clear focus on high-end visual effects. Alien: Romulus pays homage to a sci-fi classic, Better Man and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes have anthropomorphic ape protagonists, and both Dune: Part 2 and Wicked create sprawling fantastical worlds from scratch. While ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s visual effects are impressive and raise the bar from the MCU’s previous CGI problems, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking in comparison to previous Marvel releases.
