“Jim Carrey Is My Biggest Comedy Hero”: Cristo Fernández Reveals How Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Fulfills A Major Acting Dream

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 showcases Jim Carrey’s talent by having him play two characters, but he is not the only actor to take on multiple roles in the film. Cristo Fernández portrays both Pablo and Juan, who are caught in a love triangle in the fictional telenovela La Última Pasión. After finding himself down on his luck thanks to the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Ivo Robotnik becomes obsessed with the series.

Viewers might only see Cristo Fernández on Robotnik’s television screen, but he still leaves a lasting impression. Fans have been raving over his character, wanting to learn more about the actor who plays the twin brothers. Outside of Sonic, Fernández is most well-known for his role as Dani Rojas in Ted Lᴀsso.

ScreenRant interviews Fernández about playing two characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and reveals how much it means to see his name alongside actors he admires. Additionally, Fernández discusses his iconic role in Ted Lᴀsso, as he would love to reprise the role of Dani Rojas should he be given the chance. He is also hoping for his bartender character in Venom: The Last Dance and Spider-Man: No Way Home to gain superpowers and reappear in the Marvel Universe.

Jim Carrey Is A Comedic Inspiration For Fernández

“I haven’t met him in person. I hope my work in Sonic manifests that I will meet him soon enough.”

ScreenRant: What was it like when you found out you were going to be part of the Sonic universe?

Cristo Fernández: This was a very special one because one of my first video games, I played it in Super Nintendo, I don’t know if you ever played that console. That was my first one. And one of my first video games, I had a soccer one, I had Mario, but Sonic was my favorite one. The other day, my mother was telling the story of how I was always rolling around pretending to be Sonic. And then another thing I haven’t talked about before, but when I was a kid, my hair, I put lots of gel in it and I put it in spikes. And well, I think that was also probably Sonic inspiration.

But anyway, Sonic was part of my life when I was a kid with the video games and Jim Carrey is my biggest comedy hero. Same with Eugenio Derbez in Mexico. But if you ask me about my favorite films in comedy, I will have to reference so many of Jim Carrey’s. I haven’t met him in person. I hope my work in Sonic manifests that I will meet him soon enough. But just to know that he knows about my existence by watching me on the screen, that means so much to me.

And you both play two characters in Sonic 3.

Cristo Fernández: That’s something that brings us together, yeah. It was so much fun pretending to have an evil twin. I’m grateful for the director, Jeff Fowler. When it comes to comedy, I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many great people that I always loved. There are so many ways people work. Sometimes they have structure, and they want to be very methodic, and they know the formula to make it work.

But here with Jeff, it was like, we had a great funny script for the scene, and then we just added more stuff because he just told me the more ridiculous it gets, the better. So I’m just grateful. I’m also grateful for Sofia Pernas, who plays Gabriela, the actress. Because there is not a novella if you don’t have the beautiful, beautiful lady. And Sofia Pernas did it amazingly. I was playing Juan and Pablo in La Ultima Pasión. Already the тιтle makes me laugh though, right? It’s funny.

Fernández Is Glad That Fans Want More Of His Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Character

“I am grateful how the fans have reacted, even though my appearance is so small.”

Since you are now playing an actor in the Sonic universe, you could come back. If they asked you to do Sonic 4, which we know is happening, would you come back for it?

Cristo Fernández: I would love that, right? I am grateful how the fans have reacted, even though my appearance is so small. But as they say, there are no small roles and people have loved that and people want to know more about Juan and Pablo, and we want to know more about La Ultima Pasión. The other day I saw a tweet that they just wanted to see the whole world around that novella and who is the actor that plays it. Not me—the actor that plays them in that work.

I think it’s very cool because telenovelas have meant so much to so many people around the world. And me, as a Mexican and as a Latino, it’s part of my culture. I grew up watching so many telenovelas. People have told me that they’ve learned the Spanish language, and they’ve learned so much about our culture by watching telenovelas. So it was about time for me to be part of a novela. I auditioned for some novellas and I never got the role. Finally, I did it. I got one.

I think it’d be cool to learn more about this character and to see the actor’s life.

Cristo Fernández: Me too. I think we should pitch it. I mean, the people are already pitching some. If there is more Sonic, I would love to be part of it.

Fernández Would Play Ted Lᴀsso’s Dani Rojas Again “For Free”

“Ted Lᴀsso has meant so much to me, not only to me as an actor, and having more opportunities and work, but just a message that has spread to so many fans around the globe.”

Cristo Fernández as Dani Rojas in Ted Lᴀsso Season 2 on Apple TV+

We know Ted Lᴀsso is coming back for another season, and I know you’ve said you would love to come back as Dani Rojas. Is there a chance we get to see him again?

Cristo Fernández: I would love to see Dani. I recently did a campaign for State Farm where I played Dani Rojas with Patrick Mahomes and Jake from State Farm. And even though it’s a short thing to do, I just had a great time. Ted Lᴀsso has meant so much to me, not only to me as an actor, and having more opportunities and work, but just a message that has spread to so many fans around the globe. I’m sure to you too.

“Football is life” has meant so much to so many people. I am just forever grateful with that. And again, I don’t have the decision. If you ask me, I want to be back. I will just do it for free. I don’t care. I just want to be part of that because at the end of the day, that’s what we do.

I’m developing my film company, Spectrum X Films and with my sister Paloma Cinco. We now have some movies in cinemas. So if you happen to come to Mexico, you can watch them. If not, hopefully soon. But I just hope that with my work, I can inspire so many people just the same way Ted Lᴀsso has inspired so many people. And I hope there’s more. I hope there’s more Ted Lᴀsso. I hope there’s more Dani Rojas.

He’s such a positive guy. Do you feel you’ve learned anything from playing someone like that?

Cristo Fernández: Yeah, I think what I’ve learned the most from Dani is that life is complex, life is complicated. There’s, you cannot only be happy. There’s also black and white, there’s light and shadow. But regardless of what happens, I think it’s always important to know why you do certain things and remind yourself of the pᴀssion while you do certain things.

Dani is always pᴀssionate about a game. He embraces his life with the joy and reminds us of that kid we all have inside us. So if I have a stressful day, I try to remember the positive aspects of why I do what I do. And Dani reminds me of that. Unless Dani’s playing for the national team, then he gets angry. That’s some of the lessons I’ve learned from Dani.

Fernández Would Love For His Marvel Character To Get A Symbiote

“I hope the barman becomes a super barman and makes super cocktails and super margaritas.”

Bartender speaking to Eddie Brock in Spider-Man No Way Home

You also played two characters in Marvel, right? Weren’t they different versions of the bartender in the two movies?

Cristo Fernández: Yeah, I was. I’m grateful to Kelly, the director and everyone in that universe, in the production. It was a dream come true to work with Tom Hardy. For me, talking about Ted Lᴀsso, I had the opportunity to say hola to my friend Juno Temple at the premieres. I’m just grateful to be part of these universes. I hope the barman becomes a super barman and makes super cocktails and super margaritas.

And as a Mexican, as a Latino, it’s an honor to be considered in these worlds and these universes and have my name next to the people I admire. Like in Sonic, just having my name next to Keanu Reeves, to Idris Elba, to Jim Carrey. I just hope this also inspires my people, and not just my people in Latin America and in Mexico, people in general, that it’s possible to have these crazy dreams and fulfill them. But it takes hard work, it takes discipline, it takes time.

And yeah, I hope there’s more. I hope the black bug touches the barman.

I mean, it was left right in front of him. I would love to see that.

Cristo Fernández: Yeah, I saw that. I saw that, right? Yes. And I didn’t know. I saw that and I didn’t know. But I have no idea. That’s why I am just praying every day, Dios mio por favor, make the barman super barman.
