The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Writer Addresses Andrew Garfield Movie Script After Calls For Sony And Marvel To Complete The Trilogy Following No Way Home

As The Amazing Spider-Man 3 never went forward, one of the Marvel writers shares about what went down after The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Out of the Spider-Man actors who have played Peter Parker on the big screen, Andrew Garfield is the only one who never completed his trilogy. While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a financial success, its critical reception led to a domino effect that ultimately brought that franchise to an end before Sony Pictures began collaborating with Marvel Studios.

One of the writers who was attached to pen The Amazing Spider-Man 3 script back in the day was Alex Kurtzman, who was recently interviewed by ScreenRant’s own Liam Crowley at the Star Trek: Section 31 premiere. While promoting the newest installment in the Star Trek franchise, Kurtzman was asked by Crowley if his The Amazing Spider-Man 3 screenplay was ever going to see the light of day, especially after Garfield’s well-received return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as he stated the following:

Alex Kurtzman: You know, we never wrote it. We never wrote it. I did 2 and that was it for me.

What Alex Kurtzman’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Comments Mean

Based on Kurtzman’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3 comments, it wouldn’t be shocking if they had at least reached the point where they were discussing story concept ideas for what the third film would have focused on. Initially, Marc Webb was set to return for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, while stressing that it would be his final one, as The Amazing Spider-Man 4 was already being eyed by Sony Pictures. But with multiple factors like the Sony hack in 2014 along with reports that Garfield had been fired before The Amazing Spider-Man 3 cancelation, the superhero film became one of many scrapped comic book films.

Had The Amazing Spider-Man 3 actually happened, it would have at least dealt with the introduction of Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, after her scenes in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 got cut. Since it would have also taken place after Gwen Stacy’s tragic death, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 story would have likely explored Peter’s emotional state, which was alluded to in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the end, the world will have to simply speculate what the overall arc would have been in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, as there were little to no confirmed details about the story.

Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man cries while holding Zendaya's MJ in No Way Home

While The Amazing Spider-Man 3 script may never have gotten a chance to be written, if Sony Pictures ever decides to resurrect Garfield’s third project, there is no reason why they couldn’t use any of the concept ideas that they may have had in mind. Even if Garfield doesn’t get his third solo film, there is always the chance that he will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. But for now, time will tell if The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will ever happen in any capacity.
