Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie Recruits Bourne Ultimatum Writer George Nolfi

Star Wars: New Jedi Order has found its newest screenwriter. The movie, which does not yet have an official тιтle, is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. It will star Daisy Ridley, reprising her role from the new Star Wars trilogy as Rey Skywalker, who has not been seen onscreen since 2019. It was presumed that the December 2026 release slot that Disney had reserved for a Star Wars project was meant for the upcoming New Jedi Order, but it was recently reᴀssigned to Ice Age 6, calling the sci-fi movie’s development progress into question.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, The Bourne Ultimatum writer George Nolfi has boarded the New Jedi Order movie. Nolfi is the latest in a revolving door of screenwriters who have been attached to the project. The most recent was Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), who was revealed to no longer be attached as of October. Knight had already replaced the originally announced writing duo Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain), who were announced before Obaid-Chinoy boarded the project.

What This Means For New Jedi Order

Progress Is Still Being Made

It is currently unknown if the original story idea for the upcoming Star Wars movie – which would see Rey training the next generation of Jedi 15 years after the events of Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker – will still be part of Nolfi’s screenplay. The fact that this announcement was made several months after it was revealed that the previous writer had departed the project seemingly means that, while progress is slow-going, the movie is still moving forward and has not been completely abandoned.

This could indicate an effort to focus on the project’s cinematic aspects…

This is also the first time that a writer known primarily for feature films has been tapped for the New Jedi Order movie. While both Lindelof (Prometheus, World War Z, The Hunt) and Knight (Spencer, Maria, Locke) had previously penned movies, they are still best known for their television work, whereas Nolfi has only ever written one television show (2015’s Allegiance, which he created). This could indicate an effort to focus on the project’s cinematic aspects rather than its qualities as a piece of the larger multimedia franchise.

Our Take On This New Jedi Order Update

George Nolfi Is A Solid Choice

While it remains to be seen if George Nolfi will ultimately end up being the final screenwriter attached to Star Wars: New Jedi Order, he is a solid choice for rebuilding the project. Not only does he have plenty of screenwriting experience in the sci-fi genre with movies such as 2003’s Timeline, 2011’s The Adjustment Bureau, and 2016’s Spectral, he has previously stepped into pre-established franchises with The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s Twelve, so he has the skillset to navigate his newfound position.
