Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera!Den of Thieves 2: Pantera creator Christian Gudegast has confirmed plans for multiple sequels in the Gerard Butler franchise, teasing the franchise’s future movies. Despite Den of Thieves 2‘s lukewarm reviews, the movie managed to rake in $20.5 million against a $40 million budget in its opening weekend, opening at Number 1 domestically. The film continues the story of Sheriff Nick O’Brien (Butler), this time joining Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) on a mᴀssive diamond heist. While its story continues where the first left off, it also hints at a potential future continuation.
Speaking with Collider, Gudegast confirmed plans for three more movies after Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, dependent on how well the new movie performs at the box office. The director and writer explained a script for Den of Thieves 3 has already been written, while the fourth and fifth installments have been planned out. He revealed plans had been in place for a larger franchise since the beginning, with future movies continuing to explore its lead characters. Check out what Gudegast had to say below:
When I was researching Den 1, there was just so much material that we knew right away it wasn’t going to be — you hope that it performs, and luckily, it did — a one-off, but that we have many, many of these to go. The next one’s already ready to go, and then 4 and 5 are already mapped out simply because of the amount of material to come across and where we want to take these characters.
What Gudegast’s Sequel Plans Mean For The Den Of Thieves Franchise
A New Heist Franchise In The Making
Den of Thieves 2 revealed Nick’s plan was to arrest Donnie and his crew after the diamond heist, doing the right thing because of his Sheriff role. However, the cop ends up helping the Italian mafia break him out of prison, with one last text exchange between them indicating the whole crew now works for the mafia. This sets up a perfect continuation for a possible Den of Thieves 3, with the two main characters potentially crossing paths one more time as another heist goes down.
Gudegast’s confirmation of plans for three more movies indicates Den of Thieves 2‘s characters still have plenty of stories left to be told. While the focus would doubtless be on Nick and Donnie, other members of the crew like Jovanna (Evin Ahmad) or Slavko (Salvatore Esposito) could also carry the spotlight for some time. It would flesh out their relationships if the same crew came back for a third installment, making it into a mission-focused franchise akin to Fast & Furious. But, as the director points out, additional movies will require the newest one to be a box office success.
Den of Thieves could become another major franchise for Butler, joining the likes of How to Train Your Dragon and Has Fallen.
Our Take On Den Of Thieves Getting 3 More Sequels
The Franchise’s Director Has Clear Plans For Its Future
Since Gudegast already has the next three movies mapped out, it seems like the franchise could have a long, satisfying continuation beyond its latest entry. While its future depends on Den of Thieves 2: Pantera‘s box office success, the fact there are so many stories that could happen speaks to the potential the franchise holds. Although there’s no guarantee any of these planned films will happen, it could be interesting to see the franchise evolve with new heists and challenges for its heroes.
