Cillian Murphy’s 28 Years Later Role Is Disappointing, But Makes The Trilogy More Exciting

The fact that Cillian Murphy’s Jim is not returning in 28 Years Later is disappointing, but it will make the second and third films in the upcoming trilogy more exciting. Murphy played the leading role in 2002’s 28 Days Later, the franchise’s first movie. However, he did not return for 2007’s 28 Weeks Later. This is why it was exciting when it was revealed that Murphy would return for the trilogy that will continue the long-stagnant franchise. However, it has been revealed that Murphy will not appear in the first film in the trilogy, the upcoming 28 Years Later.

28 Years Later was written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, the same people who wrote and directed the original 2002 film. The story of 28 Years Later will follow a group of survivors living on an island in the United Kingdom years after the zombie outbreak began. The cast of 28 Years Later includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes. While Cillian Murphy will not be in 28 Years Later, it will still be very exciting to return to the world of the franchise, and hopefully he will return in a future movie in the series.

After So Long, It’s Disappointing That Cillian Murphy’s Jim Won’t Be In 28 Years Later

Fans of 28 Days Later Want To Learn What Happened To Jim

After the announcement that 28 Years Later was being developed, longtime fans of the franchise were desperate to know whether Murphy would be reprising his role from the first film. After Murphy signed on as a producer for 28 Years Later, it was widely reported that he would also have a role in the sequel. Fans even believed they spotted him as a zombie in the trailer for 28 Years Later. However, this was debunked, and it has since been confirmed that Murphy will not appear in 28 Years Later.

In 28 Days Later, Murphy played Jim, a bicycle courier who woke up from a coma 28 days after the Rage Virus took over the United Kingdom. While 28 Days Later had multiple endings that changed Jim’s fate, the theatrical release of the movie reveals that he survives being sH๏τ and signals a plane to try to escape England. This has largely been considered to be the canon ending to 28 Days Later, especially since Murphy was reported to return for the sequels. Therefore, it is disappointing that it won’t be revealed what happened to Jim in 28 Years Later.

28 Years Later Might Have Been Too Stuffed If Cillian Murphy Returned

28 Years Later Will Introduce Several New Characters

While Murphy’s Jim will reportedly not be appearing in 28 Years Later, it seems like the film will feature several interesting new characters. It has been revealed that Taylor-Johnson and Comer are playing a married couple in 28 Years Later, who are raising their son, Alfie, on Holy Island, which is only connected to England’s mainland by a single causeway. Reportedly, the survivors living on Holy Island have formed a cult-like community, which will create some interesting dynamics in 28 Years Later.

In addition to Taylor-Jonhson and Comer, Fiennes will also appear in 28 Years Later. In 28 Years Later, Fiennes plays the mysterious Dr. Kelson. While not much is known about this character, the trailer for 28 Years Later shows Dr. Kelson around a bone structure, which looks poised to be an important location in the trilogy. Fiennes has admitted that he has a relatively minor role in 28 Years Later, but will have a much bigger role in the trilogy’s second movie, which is subтιтled The Bone Temple.

Cillian Murphy’s Return Makes More Sense In A Future Movie

Hopefully Cillian Murphy Returns In A Future 28 Years Later Movie

Murphy’s appearance as Jim will likely be one of the most memorable moments of the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy. Therefore, even though it is disappointing that fans will have to wait longer to see Murphy return as Jim, the wait for his eventual appearance will be worth it. It has been many years since the last movie in the franchise, so it makes sense for the first movie in the trilogy to establish new characters.

Not many details are known about 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple or the third film in the trilogy, but it would be great to see Murphy in one or both of the movies.

It is actually better for 28 Years Later to tell a new story, rather than continue the story of Murphy’s Jim. If 28 Years Later is received well, then it will prove that the franchise can survive without relying on Jim, who is a somewhat nostalgic character for fans of the first film. Not many details are known about 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple or the third film in the trilogy, but it would be great to see Murphy in one or both of the movies. In the meantime, 28 Years Later looks like it will introduce several new intriguing characters.
