Blumhouse’s new horror film, Wolf Man, tells the story of a man, Blake (played by Christopher Abbott), who inherits his childhood home after his father disappears and is ᴀssumed ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. As the family approaches the farmhouse, they’re attacked by an unseen animal in the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ of night, causing them to barricade themselves inside the home. However, as the night stretches on, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable.
Wolf Man also stars Julia Garner as Blake’s wife, Charlotte, who will be forced to decide whether the terror inside their home is more lethal than the wild animal outside. Garner is mostly known for her portrayal of Ruth Langmore in the series Ozark. She is having a big year, as she will also appear in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps as a version of Silver Surfer.
ScreenRant interviewed Julia Garner about Wolf Man. She discussed working with the incredibly talented Matilda Firth, who plays her daughter Ginger. She also shared what drew her to the film and what is was like working with writer-director Leigh Whannell to create his vision. Finally, Garner detailed how scary it was acting opposite Christopher Abbott as he slowly transformed into the wolf man throughout the movie.
Julia Garner Wasn’t Worried About Wolf Man Because “Leigh Whannell Really Knows His Genre”
“It also just felt very different from any other projects that I’ve done in the past.”
ScreenRant: What was it about Wolf Man that made you want to be a part of it?
Julia Garner: Leigh Whannell really knows his genre, so I was never really too worried about it once I signed up for it that he was going to kill it. And he did. It’s great. The people attached to it. I was like, “Okay, I’m intrigued.”
And then I read the script, and I really liked the script. It also just felt very different from any other projects that I’ve done in the past, so I just want to always try something new.
Julia Garner Loved Working With Matilda Firth In Wolf Man
“She’s so sweet. She is such a professional. She’s so smart.”
ScreenRant: I love the chemistry between you and Matilda Firth. Can you talk about working with her?
Julia Garner: She’s phenomenal in this, and she’s just like, the best. She’s actually the best. She’s so sweet. She is such a professional. She’s so smart. I definitely get more scared. I get scared much more easily than she does. She does not get scared that easily.
That’s how great she is in this film, that she really looks scared, but she does not get scared easily. Yeah, she’s just like the sweetest so I had such a good time working with her. I was so happy that she was my daughter.
Julia Garner Explains Why Christopher Abbott’s Slow Transition Actually Makes Wolf Man Scarier
“I think if you want to make anything scarier, just go with something familiar.”
ScreenRant: Christopher Abbott slowly transforms throughout the film. What was it like for you working opposite that?
“O
Julia Garner: It was really interesting. The first time I saw him with the prosthetics, it was great. I could not stop looking at him. It was very weird and bizarre. And I was just like, “Oh my god, this is terrifying.” And then I got used to it after like, three days.
But yeah, no, it was, I mean, the prosthetics are incredible in this film. And, yeah, I’m very happy that I got to be a part of this film, because I think it’s that’s actually very special.
ScreenRant: Do you think it helped you not be as scared or shaken because it was a slower transition?
Julia Garner: I think, actually, it’s more scary when it is a slower transition, because I still recognized little elements of Chris. His skin and his hair were changing, but he still had his eyes. And I think if you want to make anything scarier, just go with something familiar.
I mean, that’s why they always put dolls in horror films, because you see a doll almost every day. So I think that this wolf man is almost scarier for that reason. There’s something familiar that Charlotte sees. She still sees her husband, but he’s not there anymore.
Julia Garner Teases That Her Silver Surfer Is… Shiny
“But all the Silver Surfers are shiny, so it doesn’t give you anything.”
ScreenRant: The last time we saw Silver Surfer, it was all CGI. Can you tease are you CGI, live-action, or a combination?
Julia Garner: You know. I’m, it’s shiny. But all the Silver Surfers are shiny, so it doesn’t give you anything. I’m sorry. So we’ll wait and see. I’m excited.
More About Wolf Man (2025)
What if someone you loved became something else? From Blumhouse and visionary writer-director Leigh Whannell, the creators of the chilling modern monster tale The Invisible Man, comes a terrifying new lupine nightmare: Wolf Man.
Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, It Comes at Night) stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).
But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.
