Wolf Man is a reboot of the classic Universal Monsters movie The Wolfman. This version from Blumhouse and visionary director Leigh Whannell follows a man who inherits his father’s home when he is presumed ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. After an attack by a wild animal, he starts to act strangely, causing his family to be caught between the animal outside, and the monster he is becoming.
Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott in the тιтular role, with Julia Garner playing his wife. Producer Beatriz Sequeira is no stranger to horror films. She worked alongside Leigh Whannell on The Invisible Man, and she also produced 2024’s Speak No Evil and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s. Wolf Man comes to theaters on January 17.
ScreenRant interviewed Bea Sequeira about Wolf Man. She discussed the importance of the slow transformation from Blake to werewolf, as well as what it is about horror movies that keep her coming back. Sequeira also spoke about the shorthand that she created with writer-director Leigh Whannell because they have worked together several times. Finally, she raved about the incredible Wolf Man cast and why they are so perfect for the film.
Wolf Man Is The Perfect Blend Of Terrifying & Emotional
“I think that’s one of the things that we always do in Blumhouse.”
ScreenRant: This movie is scary, emotional, sad, and tragic. Can you talk about finding the right balance?
Bea Sequeira: I think they’re connected. If you’re not emotionally invested in something, you’re not going to be scared when something scary happens to those people. I think that’s one of the things that we always do in Blumhouse; we’re giving you a drama, we smuggled a little bit of horror in it, a little bit of demons, a little bit of both of them.
Yeah, you have to be emotionally invested in the characters.
ScreenRant: The switching of perspectives in this film takes it to the next level.
Bea Sequeira: I know. We prep for a long time. We did a lot of tests. I remember Leigh Whannell explained it to us, and we’re like, “Oh, okay.” We all had our different ideas, and then making it was very exciting.
Every time that we did it on set, it was a very exciting day because we knew that we had to be on high alert and every department, working together was a great thing. It was the most fun days when we had a little bit of wolf vision.
ScreenRant: You’ve worked with Leigh Whannell before. Would you say the two of you have created a shorthand at this point?
Bea Sequeira: 100%. Yeah, we finish each other’s sentences. We work. This is my third movie with him, and we really enjoy working together.
Seeing Christopher Abbott As The Wolf Man Was “Incredible”
“I had seen the maquette, but it was still a shock.”
ScreenRant: What was your reaction when you saw Christopher Abbott as the wolf man for the first time?
Bea Sequeira: I remember, I had seen the maquette, but it was still a shock. It was incredible.
ScreenRant: The slow transition adds so many elements to Wolf Man.
Bea Sequeira: Exactly. You see the humanity behind the eyes all the time. And then there is just this moment where it goes. I think that’s what made it a little bit more grounded. It goes in, and it goes out, it’s a progression. I think that’s scarier.
You cannot slow it down and it’s just happening. I felt that that brought a little bit more of like, this could happen to you angle, basically, which is scary.
The Wolf Man Cast Is Not Only Incredible, They Are Extremely Dedicated
“They’re so disciplined. It’s just wonderful.”
ScreenRant: Matilda Firth is incredible in this. Can you talk about bringing her in?
Bea Sequeira: So Terri Taylor, the casting director, showed us a tape and I was like, “Well, we found her.” It was just incredible. There was no doubt, basically, we saw that tape and it was wonderful. She’s an incredible actress and so dedicated. She’s wonderful.
ScreenRant: Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner are also perfect in their roles.
Bea Sequeira: They’re incredible performers. They are so dedicated. And they brought a different category to the movie with their seriousness. They’re so disciplined. It’s just wonderful. Also it’s just great to see them bring this… to be Wolf Man, you have to have a humanity behind that.
I think Chris just brought it the whole time, so that was incredible.
Bea Sequeira Claims There Is Nothing Like Watching A Horror Movie In A Theater
“That communal experience cannot be compared.”
ScreenRant: You’ve worked on a lot of horror films. What is it about this genre that keeps you coming back?
Bea Sequeira: I think that it’s the experience in the movie theaters. I think watching a horror movie in a movie theater is one of the best things ever. That communal experience cannot be compared.
Bea Sequeira Would Love To Do Another Spider-Man Movie
“I think those movies also have the same sort of impact, and the fan base is so incredible.”
ScreenRant: You worked on The Amazing Spider-Man films as well. Would you ever want to do another Spider-Man film?
Bea Sequeira: Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. I think those movies also have the same sort of impact, and the fan base is so incredible. So, yeah, I would. I would love that.
More About Wolf Man (2025)
What if someone you loved became something else? From Blumhouse and visionary writer-director Leigh Whannell, the creators of the chilling modern monster tale The Invisible Man, comes a terrifying new lupine nightmare: Wolf Man.
Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, It Comes at Night) stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).
But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.
