The Boys has been a major success for Prime Video with its depiction of an alternate reality in which superheroes abuse their powers. The superhero satire premiered in 2019 and returned last year for season 4, with the upcoming The Boys season 5 now confirmed to bring the show to an end. The show is beloved for its collection of despicable and deplorable characters, with Antony Starr’s Homelander being the biggest and baddest Supe of all.
Starr, a New Zealander, was a series regular on Outrageous Fortune, which ran from 2005 to 2010, before going on to appear in projects like Rush, Tricky Business, and Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant (2023). Starr’s most notable role before joining the cast of The Boys, however, was as the lead of an acclaimed crime thriller TV show that ran on Cinemax from 2013 to 2016. This show is now finding success once more on streaming.

What Banshee’s Streaming Success Means For Its Reputation
Why The Series Works So Well
When Banshee premiered in 2013, it wasn’t for everyone. It features plenty of Sєx and violence, and is generally a very visceral and over-the-top experience. After a somewhat lukewarm response to this initial batch of episodes, the show really hit its stride in season 2, and only grew in acclaim with seasons 3 and 4.
Seasons 3 and 4 both have rare 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
Banshee could affectionately be called “trashy” television, but it found a way to be the best possible version of this. Each season delivered thrilling action sequences, surprising story twists, and some standout performances, with Starr, especially, excelling in his lead role. The rise of streaming has drastically changed the entertainment landscape, and not always for the better, but it’s streaming that has allowed Banshee to rise and reach new audiences almost a decade after it ended, and that’s worth celebrating.
