Nosferatu Enters Highest-Grossing Horror Movie Charts After Surpᴀssing Franchise Movie

Nosferatu is making waves on the list of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time as it climbs above a classic franchise. Robert Eggers’ 2024 horror reimagining of the influential 1922 silent horror of the same name serves as an adaptation of the Dracula story. The Nosferatu cast features Bill Skarsgård in the тιтular role as Count Orlok, alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, and Emma Corrin. The movie was released December 25 in the United States and recently pᴀssed a significant box office milestone.

Willem Dafoe starred in the 2000 independent film Shadow of the Vampire, a fictionalized account of the making of Nosferatu.

Per The Numbers, Nosferatu has climbed into the top 50 highest-grossing horror movies of all time. It has well exceeded the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, posting a gross (to date) of $136.1 million. The film is sitting at #46 on the list of top 100 All Time Domestic Box Office for Horror Movies, with a domestic gross of $82.63 million. Nosferatu‘s strong performance has seen it pᴀss Freddy vs Jason, which sits at #47 with a domestic total of $82.62 million. It has Insidious Chapter 2‘s $83.6 million firmly in its sights.

What This Means For Nosferatu’s Box Office Success

The Movie Looks Set To Continue Its Winning Run

Nosferatu might not have reached blockbuster levels in terms of box office performance, but for a 132-minute Gothic horror movie, it’s performing very well. There is also reason to believe that it could continue its impressive display and have long legs stretching into February. How well Nosferatu will perform for its entire theatrical run remains to be seen, but there is every chance it can break into the top 40 soon, toppling Saw II at #40 with a domestic total of $87 million. Eggers’ movie only needs to make $5 million more, which is entirely possible since, last weekend, it earned close to $7 million.

Eggers has always been a director focused on making an aesthetically pleasing project, and while movies like The Lighthouse and The Northman are not for everyone, they have a style and swagger to them that make him a compelling director to many audiences. Coupled with this is the age-old Dracula myth brought to life, as a strong addition to the Nosferatu movie series, and the captivating appeal of vampire mythology is sure to help improve the movie’s box office pull.

Our Take On Nosferatu’s Box Office Legacy

Expect The Movie To Continue Climbing

The nature of Nosferatu ensures it will almost certainly not disturb the top of the chart, with IT‘s $328.8 million domestic gross and Jaws‘s $273. 6 million safely out of reach. However, though it’s an unlikely chance, it would not be outside the realms of possibility for the movie to hit $100 million domestically, which would edge it above Nicole Kidman’s stylish horror classic The Others. With a strong cast, familiar story, and gorgeous cinematography, the movie could also be buoyed by a slew of award nominations, and Nosferatu could sink its fangs further into the box office.
