James Cameron provides a production progress update for Avatar: Fire and Ash which is good news for the fourth and fifth films. The writer-director’s franchise began in 2009 with Avatar, which has made $2.9 billion at the box office and still stands as the highest-grossing film of all time. The first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, didn’t come until 13 years later, but still made $2.3 billion, meaning that Cameron’s plans for three additional sequels, which are in various stages of production, including Avatar: Fire and Ash, would be realized.
Now, ahead of its release later this year, Cameron has provided a production progress update on Avatar: Fire and Ash that spells good news for the fourth and fifth films. During an interview with Empire, Cameron says they are much further along on Fire and Ash than they were with Way of Water at this same point in time, meaning they can sooner continue and begin working on the fourth and fifth films and likely avoid any future delays. Read Cameron’s full comments below:
It’s in strong shape, I think. We’ve doubled the number of sH๏τs finished at this stage of the game than we had on movie two [and] the films are about equal length. So that puts us well ahead of the curve, which is something I’ve never, frankly, experienced before. [It’s] a little bit less nightmarish. We’re getting to the point where we’re actually getting good at this.
What James Cameron’s Comments Mean For The Avatar Franchise
The Sequels Are Coming Along Smoothly
Since Cameron and company are ahead of schedule on Avatar: Fire and Ash, they will sooner be able to continue and begin working on the fourth and fifth films and likely avoid any future delays. Fire and Ash is deep into post-production ahead of its release this December, and parts of Avatar 4 have already been filmed, which was sH๏τ ahead of time to capture the child actors before they grow to look significantly older than their characters should be. However, they won’t start filming the remainder of Avatar 4 until Fire and Ash is finished.
This progress made on Fire and Ash should ensure that the fourth and fifth films avoid any future delays. Fire and Ash‘s theatrical release was delayed a whopping nine times before finally settling on December 2025. Avatar 4 has already been delayed five times and is currently scheduled for release in December 2029. Though an official release date hasn’t yet been announced for Avatar 5, it is expected to be released in December 2031.

As Cameron says, after three films, they are finally “getting good” at making Avatar movies, which should help the franchise stay on schedule and avoid any future delays. Way of Water took 13 years because they needed to develop new technology to film motion capture underwater, a feat never accomplished before, which led to significant delays. Avatar: Fire and Ash was also subject to delays, but after three movies, Cameron and company are finally getting good at making them, which means future sequels should go much more smoothly.
Avatar: Fire and Ash releases on December 19, followed by Avatar 4 on December 21, 2029 and Avatar 5 expected on December 19, 2031.
