A24 has become one of the leading producers in horror over the past decade. Most recently, their horror film Heretic succeeded at the box office and among critics, scoring an impressive 91% Tomatometer. Hugh Grant’s performance has also garnered attention at awards ceremonies, earning him nominations at the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards. Last year also saw the release of other A24 horror films including Y2K, The Front Room, MaXXXine, and I Saw The TV Glow.
Even before last year, A24 has been cultivating directorial talents in the horror genre for years. They were the distributor behind The Witch, a film that would go on to make stars out of both director Robert Eggers and actor Anya Taylor-Joy. The company added other indie auteurs to its growing list of directorial collaborators, including Clerks helmer Kevin Smith, who directed their wacky 2014 horror film Tusk. Another director that A24 had the honor of introducing to the world now has his biggest movie on Netflix, and it has been met with huge success.

The film is A24’s fourth-highest-grossing movie at the worldwide box office, taking home over $80 million. Seven years after its theatrical success, Hereditary has now become a streaming hit on Netflix as the no. 6 movie in the United States today (January 16). This comes immediately after Netflix added the film to its platform on January 15. Hereditary was beaten out on the charts today by Ad Vitam, Despicable Me 2, Despicable Me, Rush Hour, and H๏τel Transylvania 2, but ranked above Rush Hour 2, The Age of Adaline, The Secret Life of Pets, and Rush Hour 3.
Our Take On Hereditary’s Netflix Success
This Is Good News For Ari Aster
Hereditary‘s instant streaming success shows just how beloved the film is after all these years. This movie propelled A24 on the map as a major horror studio, shocking audiences with the brutality of its scenes and creative ending. This streaming performance also bodes well for Aster’s next project, Eddington, which is a genre-bending Western featuring Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, and Austin Butler. Aster’s strong box office record dipped with his third film Beau is Afraid, so hopefully the Hereditary buzz can give Eddington momentum to succeed.
