A sequel is finally in development to 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the anticipated follow-up, The Devil Wears Prada 2. The Aughts classic is based on Lauren Weisberger’s eponymous novel and follows plucky journalist Andy (Anne Hathaway), who lands the job of a lifetime as fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly’s (Meryl Streep) ᴀssistant. Unfortunately, Andy quickly learns that Miranda’s world is cut-throat, and she struggles to keep up with her despotic boss.
Fondly remembered as one of Anne Hathaway’s best movies, and certainly the picture that allowed her to graduate to full-fledged star status, The Devil Wears Prada carved its place in 2000s popular culture. The movie’s tremendous box office success made a sequel seem like good business, and the fascinating world crafted by the film left viewers wanting more. Unfortunately, plans for a sequel never materialized, and the chances for The Devil Wears Prada 2 seemed slimmer and slimmer. However, new developments have emerged that make the much-desired sequel seem like a reality.

Stanley Tucci Discusses The Devil Wears Prada 2
As many of the major cast members from the original continue to weigh in on the sequel, the latest news finds Stanley Tucci discussing The Devil Wears Prada 2. The beloved actor who played Nigel in the first film, offered a cautious-but-optimistic update on the developing sequel. As for concrete details, all Tucci could say is “I know they’re working on it,“ before joking that he’d be sent to “the actor’s prison or something” if he revealed anymore. He also mentioned that he has high hopes that the movie will actually happen, but that nothing is for certain yet.

I know they’re working on it. If it happens, I would be so happy, but I cannot give you any information. Otherwise, I’ll go to the actor’s prison or something. [The original] was one of the best experiences ever.

The Sequel Is Finally In Development
Talks of a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada began as early as 2006, and small updates have offered glimmers of hope across the decades that Andy, Miranda, and Emily would all return. Now, Disney has confirmed that development on The Devil Wears Prada 2 is happening, and have even revealed that original writer Aline Brosh McKenna and producer Wendy Finnerman are back.
A timeline for the sequel is elusive, but major stars Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are reportedly set to reprise their roles, and the sequel will follow Streep’s Miranda Priestly as she tries to save her faltering magazine by enlisting the help of Blunt’s Emily Charlton.
The Devil Wears Prada premiered on June 30, 2006.
Nothing is known about Anne Hathaway’s involvement, and the Oscar winner has given mixed signals about joining a Devil Wears Prada sequel in the past. The update also doesn’t provide a timeline for the sequel, and it’s unclear how far along Disney’s development has progressed. However, the fact that the project was announced at all is a good sign that development is chugging along nicely, and more updates are expected soon.

Emily Blunt & Meryl Streep Are Returning
Perhaps the most enticing part about Disney’s update concerning The Devil Wears Prada 2 is that original stars Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are expected to reprise their roles – although this has not been officially confirmed. Streep was already a world-renowned actor by 2006, and her turn as wicked fashion editor Miranda Priestly was yet another feather in her cap. However, Emily Blunt’s role as the unapproachable but ultimately kind Emily Charlton, was one of the earliest examples of her future success as a leading lady. Anne Hathaway’s Andy was also a star-making role, but Hathaway’s participation in the sequel is uncertain.
though she loves the role, she has suggested that the time has pᴀssed for a sequel.
Anne Hathaway has spoken about The Devil Wears Prada 2 in the past, and though she loves the role, she has suggested that the time has pᴀssed for a sequel. However, with Hathaway entering a new phase of her career, she may be more willing to look backward at one of the movies that made her a star. The rest of the cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2 is unknown, but it’s unlikely that Streep and Blunt will be the only two original stars to reprise their roles. Stanley Tucci has expressed his hopes for the sequel, heavily implying Nigel would return too.

Miranda Is Desperate To Save Her Failing Magazine
The ending of The Devil Wears Prada did nothing to shake the solid foundations of Miranda Priestly’s grip on the fashion industry, and she was still at the height of her powers. However, story details revealed about The Devil Wears Prada 2 paint an entirely different picture. According to the initial sequel announcement, the plot will see Miranda enlist the help of Emily Charlton to revitalize her failing magazine. Charlton has moved on to become a powerful ad executive since the first film, and her expertise is desperately needed.
This thread opens the door for a host of humorous and even heart-wrenching storytelling opportunities as Miranda struggles to adjust to the modern age and the tragic “death of print media”. Even if Hathaway’s Andy isn’t in the movie, Miranda’s fall from grace would make for a compelling story, and could give Streep the chance to work her magic as she transforms the former devil into an angel. Whatever The Devil Wears Prada 2 ends up being, the writers aren’t wanting for story possibilities.
It’s interesting that there are no hints that the sequel will follow the book series at all – although this may be because the books follow Andy and Emily, rather than focusing on Miranda. The Devil Wears Prada novel was followed by Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, and then When Life Gives You LuLuLemons.
Revenge Wears Prada picks up 10 years after the first book leaves off, with Andy and Emily working together at a bridal magazine, and Andy getting ready to marry the love of her life (thankfully, not Nate), while When Life Gives You LuLuLemons centers entirely on Emily (now an image consultant), alongside two new characters, as they navigate the suburbs of the rich and powerful. While neither of these books looks like they will become fodder for the movie sequel, the тιтle very well might – after all, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns is a fantastic name for a sequel.
