Nosferatu Becomes Second Highest-Grossing Movie For Studio At Domestic Box Office, Beating 2005 Oscar-Winning Movie

Nosferatu continues to sink its teeth into the domestic box office, becoming the second highest-grossing movie for its studio. The stunning Robert Eggers remake of the classic 1922 silent film has posted strong commercial numbers, both domestically and internationally, and the movie is generating significant buzz for the awards season. The movie, which stars Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and long-time Eggers collaborator Willem Dafoe, has enjoyed a strong theatrical run, helping it to set a record for its studio.

According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Nosferatu‘s $84.4 million domestic gross has now seen it become the second-highest-grossing movie of all-time for studio Focus Features, moving ahead of the acclaimed Oscar-winning movie Brokeback Mountain, which took $83 million domestically. It ranks behind only the Downton Abbey movie, which took a staggering $96.8 million during its run in 2019, making it the studio’s most successful movie ever. Nosferatu also ranks as the studio’s seventh highest-grossing movie globally, with over $142 million worldwide.

What This Means For Nosferatu‘s Long-Term Prospects

The Movie May Have The Legs To Become Focus’ Most Successful Film

The success of Nosferatu does not appear to be slowing down any time soon, and considering the production budget was around $50 million, the film should stand to deliver a fairly substantial profit for Focus Features. The movie’s blend of horror, gorgeous production design, creepy atmosphere, and stellar cast certainly helped it impress audiences. In particular, Nosferatu‘s cast, including Depp and Skarsgård, have received positive praise for their subtle and dark performances. While it is unclear how much the movie will take overall, it was projected to earn between $180-200 million and looks well-placed to surpᴀss that estimate.

Indeed, Nosferatu surpᴀssing Downton Abbey‘s $194.7 million worldwide run is not outside the realms of possibility, and it could well push past this, particularly as the movie is starting to generate some serious awards buzz. The film is already Egger’s highest-grossing movie and could mark a healthy working relationship with Focus Features, especially if the movie achieves unexpected success in theaters and on streaming.

Our Verdict On Nosferatu‘s Box Office Success

A Well-Known Story, Lack Of Genre Compeтιтion & Oscar Buzz Are All Helping

There are many reasons why Nosferatu could be performing so well at the box office, and the familiarity of the story for audiences is bound to be one of the leading ones. There is also the fact that there are not any movies currently in theaters that are similar to Nosferatu, in terms of scope, style, and ambition, and this has made it stand out. What’s more, the movie has enjoyed a slew of recent awards nominations, and could even be in Oscar contention, which has no doubt buoyed the box office, and will continue to do so.
