A24’s Horror Movie Trending On Netflix Set A Huge Box Office Record 7 Years Ago That Was Finally Beaten By Everything Everywhere All At Once

Netflix is currently streaming one of A24’s most popular horror movies, so now is as good a time as any to look back on the incredible box office accomplishment the film reached before the release of 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once. These days, A24 is a beloved production company that has specialized in the horrific, the strange, and the awesomely beautiful. From movies like Lady Bird to the X franchise, A24 puts out movies that may not be for everyone, but have a definable and respectable style. Yet, A24 wasn’t always the big name it is today.

A24 first originated in 2013, with a comedy film called A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swann III. The movie was a mᴀssive flop, earning only negative reviews from critics who accused the film of having no substance whatsoever. Fortunately though, A24 quickly revived its reputation just a few months later with its film, Spring Breakers. From there, the company took on better and better projects, not only gaining positive attention from critics but also incredible accolades. Most recently, Everything Everywhere All At Once became A24’s most Academy Award nominated project ever.

Hereditary Was A24’s Highest-Grossing Movie For 4 Years Until Everything Everywhere All At Once

How Everything Everywhere All At Once Became A Box Office Hit

Netflix recently added the A24 horror movie, Hereditary, to its catalog, and it’s a perfect addition to the service. Hereditary follows a suburban family who begin to notice horrifying occurrences after the death of their mysterious matriarch. While Hereditary was certainly a critical success, it also set a box office record of A24. For four years, Hereditary was the company’s highest-grossing movie of all time, at $80 million. It was only in 2022, with the release of Everything Everywhere All At Once, that Hereditary’s record-breaking spot was taken. Regardless, Hereditary’s impact is hard to ignore.

While Hereditary’s $80 million earnings were impressive back in 2018, Everything Everywhere All At Once blew the horror movie out of the water by earning $111 million at the box office. In fact, the quirky sci-fi movie is still A24’s highest-grossing film of all time. Arguably, the success of EEAAO isn’t too different from Hereditary’s success. Both movies offered incredibly distinct stories with unique styles. More than that, Hereditary and EEAAO are both unapologetic about their genre. Hereditary has some of A24’s most intense scares, while EEAAO pulls no punches in its sci-fi fantasy world.

Talk To Me Surpᴀssed Hereditary In 2023 As A24’s Highest-Grossing Horror Movie

Talk To Me Is Surprisingly Similar To Hereditary

After EEAAO became A24’s new highest-grossing movie, Hereditary took on a new тιтle: A24’s highest-grossing horror movie. Unfortunately, this label did not last long either. In 2023, Talk to Me overtook Hereditary, earning $92 million at the box office. Talk to Me is yet another A24 horror movie which revolves around a young woman named Mia who is grieving the loss of her mother. When she is introduced to a dangerous new party game where teens communicate with the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, Mia’s loss suddenly feels like an unexpected gain. Yet, she soon learns the consequences of letting spirits into the living world.

Talk to Me also harkens back to Hereditary by focusing on grief and generational trauma.

Just like Hereditary and EEAAO, Talk to Me immediately grabbed the attention of audiences with its premise and dark tone. In reality, Talk to Me is even more similar to Hereditary. Both movies include shocking scares and unforgettably gruesome images. Talk to Me also harkens back to Hereditary by focusing on grief and generational trauma. Even the movies’ endings are reminiscent of each other, as neither has a happy finale. All in all, Talk to Me’s box office success was aided by the fact that A24’s previous horror movies (like Hereditary) impressed viewers.

Why Hereditary Was Such A Mᴀssive Box Office Success For A24 In 2018

Hereditary Is A Staple Of A24’s History

Hereditary certainly deserved to be A24’s highest-grossing film for four years. As previously mentioned, it lured viewers in with its straightforward yet mysterious premise and its traumatic scares. However, there is another important reason why Hereditary became such a box office hit. Namely, Hereditary had the largest theatrical release of any A24 film that had come before it. The movie premiered in nearly 3000 theaters. Because Hereditary was more widely available to viewers, and came after successes such as The Witch and It Comes At Night, the movie was able to rack up way more money.

Ultimately, Hereditary’s wide release is yet another reason why the movie goes down as one of A24’s most important releases. Hereditary broke records that the company had never seen broken before, allowing A24 to expand even further. Although the movie has now been surpᴀssed by more modern entries, Hereditary is a classic and should not be so quickly forgotten. Now that it is streaming on Netflix, every A24 fan or horror lover must watch Hereditary.
