Back In Action 2 Chances At Netflix Addressed By Director

Warning: This article contains spoilers for 2025’s Back in Action. The director of Back in Action has discussed the possibility of a sequel. The new Netflix movie is an action-comedy directed and co-written by Horrible Bosses‘ Seth Gordon that stars Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz (in her first movie role since 2014’s Annie) as Matt and Emily, a married couple whose former lives as CIA spies drag them and their kids into an action-packed adventure. The Back in Action cast also includes Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, Kyle Chandler, and Glenn Close.

RadioTimes.com had the opportunity to sit down with Seth Gordon to discuss the ending of Back in Action, which involves Emily and Matt being approached by Baron (Scott) for another mission, this time involving Emily’s father. Gordon teased that he has “got some ideas” about what that could involve in a possible sequel, which has not yet been officially greenlit by Netflix. He also revealed that he has thought about “who could play the part” of Emily’s dad. Read his full quote below:

Oh yeah, [I’ve] got some ideas about what it would be about and who could play the part, but, you know…

What This Means For Back in Action 2

Its Status Remains Unknown

Ultimately, it remains to be seen if a sequel to the Netflix action-comedy movie ever gets off the ground. Back in Action reviews have earned it a dismal 25% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and at the time of writing there are not yet enough user reviews to determine if general audiences feel any differently from critics. It is likewise too soon to tell if the movie will debut on Netflix’s Top 10 movie chart, which will not be updated until Tuesday. However, if it debuts in a high position and maintains strong viewership over its first few weeks, it could very well earn a sequel.

Critics have given Back in Action an average rating of 4.6 out of 10 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Should that be the case, Gordon will be ready. The fact that Gordon has already been thinking about the prospect of who could star in a sequel and what it would be about would seem to indicate that he is interested in returning as writer, director, or both. It is also possible that both Diaz and Foxx could return, because this thinking may have been spurred by the fact that the stars are contracted to appear in a sequel should the original movie become a success.

There Are Many Good Options For Casting Emily’s Dad

If a sequel does get off the ground, there are plenty of solid options for actors to cast as Emily’s father, making good on the tease in the Back in Action ending. Actors who are the right age include Jeff Goldblum, Liam Neeson, John Goodman, and David Hᴀsselhof, who would all bring unique energy to the action-comedy sequel. However, the fact that the movie’s тιтle could be read as a reference to Cameron Diaz’s return to the screen, it may be best to seek out a full or partially retired actor like Rick Moranis to pull off a similar trick.
