Shadyside’s curse may have been broken in Fear Street Part 3: 1666, but there is even more terror on the horizon in Fear Street: Prom Queen. Following the wildly successful Fear Street trilogy on Netflix, the project was originally pitched as the start of a greater anthology franchise, and there are plenty of R.L. Stine books to draw from. Directed by Leigh Janiak, Fear Street‘s story is told over three movies that take place in 1994, 1978 and 1666, respectively, and pays homage to horror classics like Scream and Friday the 13th.

Set in the small town of Shadyside, the trilogy follows a group of teens as they try to survive a witch’s curse that periodically causes a Shadysider to become possessed and go on a brutal killing spree. Their investigation takes them all the way back to the source of the curse in 1666, when a local witch named Sarah Fier was hanged and has supposedly kept her grip on the town ever since. After some shocking reveals, an upsetting encounter with a bread-slicer, and a grand finale in the local mall, the Fear Street trilogy ends on a post-credits tease for future installments.

Fear Street 4’s Rating Is Revealed

With the wait ongoing for a release date or trailer, the latest news confirms the rating for Fear Street: Prom Queen. Continuing the trend set by the three predecessors which makes Fear Street the most mature R.L. Stine adaptation to date, Prom Queen has earned an “R” rating from the MPA. All three previous films in the series were also rated “R”, and for similar reasons as Prom Queen. According to the MPS, Prom Queen includes “Strong bloody violence and gore, teen drug use, language and some Sєxual references,” all of which adds up to the “R”.

This shouldn’t have too much of an effect on the movie’s release, since Netflix viewers aren’t subject to the same regulations as theatrical films. On top of that, Netflix has clearly committed to a more mature approach to Stine’s young adult book series, something that has brought the beloved horror author into the realm of hard-hitting terror for the first time. As a counterbalance to Goosebumps, Fear Street can offer a darker and scarier product, much like Stine’s books have for decades.

Fear Street: Prom Queen was confirmed in 2023, though at the time it wasn’t known what story the movie would adapt. Netflix has a pretty strong track record of delivering shows and movies once they are announced, and there is an incentive for the streamer to continue their popular collaboration with R.L. Stine. The Fear Street trilogy was a well-received series for them, and it would make sense that the streamer wanted to rush another movie into production.

Production began in May 2024, and though news was scant in the interim, a release window was eventually revealed in October 2024. Netflix plans to release Fear Street: Prom Queen at some point in 2025, and though that is a wide release window, it likely won’t be in the second half of the year. The most likely arrival time for the next R.L. Stine Netflix movie will be the early part of the year.

A Brand New Cast For Prom Queen

Though details are still largely unknown, most of the cast of Fear Street: Prom Queen has been revealed, and the ensemble represents a mix of established and new talent. No characters have been announced yet, but Alien: Covenant star Katherine Waterston will appear, alongside award-winner Lili Taylor (The Conjuring) and Chris Klein (American Pie). Newcomers include the likes of Suzanna Son, who drew acclaim for her role in Sean Baker’s Red Rocket, and India Fowler (The Amazing Mr. Blunden). Fina Strazza (Paper Girls), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Ella Rubin (Gossip Girl) have all been cast as well.

Which R.L. Stine Book Is Being Adapted?

R.L. Stine not only officially confirmed that production on Fear Street 4 was beginning in early 2024, but he also revealed that the movie will adapt his novel The Prom Queen from 1992. Coming as the 15th book in the Fear Street series, The Prom Queen is set in the familiar environment of Shadyside (the setting of the Fear Street universe) and follows high schooler Lizzie McVay, who is one of the five candidates for prom queen at Shadyside High in the 1980s. However, things take a turn for the terrifying as the prom queen candidates begin turning up brutally murdered.

At this juncture, it is unclear how closely Fear Street: Prom Queen will follow the book, or if it will merely use it as a framework to tell a continuation of the first three movies. With the Sarah Fier storyline seemingly done and dusted, Fear Street: Prom Queen could be a fresh start, or it could devise a way to bring back the ancient curse for even more shenanigans in Shadyside.
