After 2017’s $817 Million DC Movie Success, I Can’t Believe 1 Hero Is Still Missing From The DC Universe’s Release Schedule

The new DC Universe has replaced the DC Extended Universe, yet one highly successful property is perplexingly absent from the DCU’s release schedule. The DCEU was, sadly, troubled by divisive entries and inconsistent financial and critical success, with few properties that truly soared. After James Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-CEOs of DC Studios, they decided to partially reboot the franchise, establishing the DCU with a mostly clean slate and preparing audiences for new versions of classic characters like Superman and Batman, while others would retain their DCEU-era actors.

Although David Corenswet will replace Henry Cavill as Superman and a new Batman is set to debut in the upcoming The Brave and the Bold, several DCEU characters – mostly from Gunn’s own properties – will carry over into the new DCU. Jason Momoa – who won over countless viewers as Aquaman in the DCEU – will portray Lobo in the new DCU. There is potential for more character or story elements of the DCEU to join the DCU. One of the most successful DCEU properties, however, is largely absent from the DCU’s announced slate in any form thus far.

Wonder Woman’s 2017 Success Makes Her Movie Absence In The DCU More Notable

Gal Gadot's Diana reaches for her sword in Wonder Woman

2017’s Wonder Woman was a major success at both the box office and among critics and viewers. Strangely, there has yet to be any official announcement of a Wonder Woman project in the DCU, aside from Paradise Lost, which will most likely not include Wonder Woman herself. This is especially odd, considering that the DCEU only made Wonder Woman and her comic mythos more popular than before. Moreover, the status of Wonder Woman’s likely recasting has yet to be clarified.

Gal Gadot’s definitive Wonder Woman was undoubtedly one of the DCEU’s highlights and, according to Gadot herself, in August 2023, Gunn planned to have her remain in the role in the DCU. Multiple reports – none of which were confirmed or denied by Gunn – stated that Gadot would not return to the role and Gunn would later state that he has not cast the DCU’s Wonder Woman yet. This, unfortunately, makes Gadot’s DCU reprisal of the Wonder Woman role unlikely at best, and the eventual announcement of a new Wonder Woman property highly anticipated.

James Gunn has expressed interest in a Wonder Woman animated series, though it is unknown if it would be set in the new DC Universe, its own continuity, or an established franchise like the DC Animated Universe.

The DC Universe Has Teased A Wonder Woman Movie Could Be On The Horizon

Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, Supergirl Robin Creature Commandos Episode 4

While there has not been an announcement of a solo Wonder Woman movie in the DCU yet, the franchise will explore her comic lore in the forthcoming Paradise Lost. Set before Diana’s lifetime, the series will explore the society and culture of Themyscira, likely setting the stage for a dedicated Wonder Woman solo project. Notably, Wonder Woman herself has appeared in the new DC Universe, albeit in a vision in Creature Commandos.
