Sky High’s Scrapped Sequel Would Have Done The Boys Spinoff’s Premise Years Earlier

Sky High, a superhero movie with somewhat spoof elements like The Boys, would have used the Prime Video show’s spin-off premise much earlier had the canceled sequel come to fruition. Sky High and The Boys are vastly different superhero properties, but that is not to say they do not share some similarities. Although Sky High is much less mature than The Boys and the way they depict superheroes is different, both projects contain elements that parody the worlds of Marvel, DC, and other popular franchises.

As the wait for The Boys season 5’s story goes on, audiences are not only waiting to see how the show will end but also how its more humorous moments will parody the tropes of superheroes and their powers. As alluded to, Sky High‘s many characters spoof the superhero genre in a similar way, which would definitely have continued in a second film. Unfortunately, Sky High‘s canceled sequel never came to fruition, yet if it did, it would have used The Boys‘ spin-off premise long before Gen V was ever released.

Sky High 2 Would’ve Been About A Superhero College Called Save U

The canceled Sky High sequel and its many elements have since been outlined by the original film’s director, Mike Mitchell. Mitchell revealed that Sky High 2 was planned as Save U, a film about the former’s characters growing up and heading to a superhero university. The original cast was set to reunite for the sequel as the fun of a high school superhero movie was translated to the world of college. For many reasons, Sky High 2 did not happen, explaining why the original movie has become somewhat of a cult film in the years since its release.

However, had Sky High 2 been realized, it could have prevented The Boys‘ spin-off, Gen V, from ever happening. Gen V season 2 is expected in 2025 and will continue the story of a superhero university within the same shared universe as The Boys. Upon its release, this premise proved incredibly refreshing and unique for the superhero genre but, in another world, could have felt derivative of Save U had the Sky High sequel been made and released.

Why Sky High 2 Never Happened (Despite Having A Story Ready To Go)

Regular Hollywood Hurdles Got In The Way

Naturally, the burning question is why Sky High 2 never happened. As evident, the story was ready to go and the original director was on board, but the film stalled and was eventually canceled. One reason for this could have been hinted at by Mitchell in an interview with Gizmodo. Mitchell stated that a sequel to Sky High would only have happened if everyone from the original cast agreed to return, implying that some actors may not have been available at the time.

Sky High was not the overwhelming success that Disney was expecting…

Another more likely reason has proven to be the bane of many other canceled sequels and franchises in Hollywood: the box office. The film was not a disaster at the box office, earning $86 million against a $35 million budget. Regardless, Sky High was not the overwhelming success that Disney was expecting, and the acquisition of the MCU in the 2010s led the House of Mouse to focus on more surefire superhero successes. For these reasons, a sequel to Sky High did not happen, though the clamor for such a story persists almost 20 years later.
