After Meryl Streep & Anne Hathaway, The Devil Wears Prada 2 Can’t Happen Without Justice For One Original Character

The Devil Wears Prada is now joining the trend of long-awaited sequels, and though it obviously needs its two main actresses to properly happen, it also needs another original character who deserves justice. In 2006, Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel The Devil Wears Prada got a big-screen adaptation directed by David Frankel. Starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada was a critical and commercial success, with the performances of its main cast getting the most praise.

The Devil Wears Prada follows Andrea Sachs (Hathaway), an aspiring journalist who, despite her lack of knowledge and experience in the fashion industry, is hired as a junior personal ᴀssistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep). Miranda is the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine and a respected but feared figure in the fashion industry. What follows is Andy doing her best to survive not just in the fashion world, but as the ᴀssistant of the demanding and unpredictable Miranda. Now, almost two decades later, a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada is in development, but it needs another original character to return.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Needs Stanley Tucci’s Nigel As Much As Hathaway & Streep

Nigel Is A Key Character In The Devil Wears Prada

Joining Miranda, Andy, and Emily (played by Emily Blunt) at Runway magazine is Nigel, played by Stanley Tucci. Nigel is Runway’s art director, and as such, he works closely with Miranda, to the point where they become very close. Nigel often serves as Andy’s bridge to Miranda, as she can be not just hard to approach but also deal with, and helps her improve her style to better fit her job. Despite being a supporting character, Nigel is an unforgettable and key presence in The Devil Wears Prada.

The sequel to The Devil Wears Prada was announced to be in early development in July 2024, with Frankel in talks to return as director. However, at the time of writing, there’s still no confirmation about Streep and Hathaway coming back, even though, per initial reports, Streep and Blunt are expected to return. As for Tucci’s return as Nigel, he revealed to Variety in January 2025 that he would be happy to return but can’t say anything about it at the moment.

It’s also understood that Nigel was key, along with Miranda, in making Runway what it is.

If any supporting characters from The Devil Wears Prada should return in the sequel, that’s Tucci’s Nigel. The character provided kindness and empathy in an environment plagued with ambition, selfishness, and betrayal, and Andy might not have gone as far in her career in the fashion world without him. It’s also understood that Nigel was key, along with Miranda, in making Runway what it is. If The Devil Wears Prada 2 is about Miranda looking to revitalize her failing magazine, she’s going to need Nigel for that.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Must Deliver Justice For Nigel After Miranda’s Betrayal

One Of Miranda’s Worst Actions Was Against Nigel

The Devil Wears Prada Andy and Nigel shocked

Not only is Nigel an important character in The Devil Wears Prada, but he also deserves justice after Miranda’s betrayal in the first movie. While in Paris for Fashion Week, Nigel tells Andy that he took a job as creative director with designer James Holt. Later that night, Andy learns from writer Christian Thompson (Simon Baker) that Jacqueline Follet from French Runway is set to replace Miranda as the EIC in New York. Andy, concerned for Miranda after also learning that her husband has filed for divorce, tries to warn her, but she’s dismissive.

The Devil Wears Prada doesn’t reveal where Nigel goes after the betrayal or if he continues to be friends with Miranda.

At a luncheon, Miranda surprises Andy and Nigel by announcing Follet as Holt’s new creative director and later reveals that she already knew of the plans to replace her. To keep her job, Miranda betrays Nigel, and it’s understood that he leaves Runway. The Devil Wears Prada doesn’t reveal where Nigel goes after the betrayal or if he continues to be friends with Miranda, so it’s only fair to give him justice and closure in the sequel.

With Miranda’s career not what it was once and seemingly desperate to revive her magazine (there’s a reason why she’s calling Emily and not Andy, after all), The Devil Wears Prada 2 can show how Nigel went on to succeed while Miranda’s decline began. Whether Nigel would accept to help Miranda or not is to be seen, but he deserves a good future after what she did to him.
