The Lion King (1994)

The Lion King is not only one of Disney’s most beautiful animated movies, but also one of the most tragic thanks to one the best betrayals in cinematic history. Even after years since its premiere, Mufasa’s death is still a heartbreaking movie scene that is hard to recover from. And if it is true that the demise of Simba’s wise and noble-hearted father, a character the viewer immediately falls in love with, is devastating, it is also the way the Lion King falls to his fate that still cuts deep.

In one of Disney’s most shocking scenes, while attempting to save his son, Mufasa remains stuck hanging off a precipice. It is at that moment, while begging his brother to help him, that Scar shows his true colors and, after years of burning resentment and envy, lets the king fall to his death. The betrayal still cuts deep because, even if Scar had already revealed his villainous nature, he crosses every boundary when he decides to murder his own family in cold blood.

The Existence Of Aaron

Primal Fear (1996)

One of the most startling twists in the history of cinema, the existence (or more precisely, the nonexistence) of Aaron Stampler haunts viewer to this day. Defense attorney Martin Vail, played by Richard Gere, spends the entirety of the film pᴀssionately and convincingly defending Aaron, a young altar boy accused of murder. He builds his case around the boy’s dissociative idenтιтy disorder, believing him to be a victim of circumstance.

However, the story evolves to a shocking climax as Aaron confesses that his meek and stuttering persona was a facade to avoid punishment. It is hard to recover from such a vicious betrayal because it destroys everything Vail has been building up to throughout the story, with the approval and support of the audience. Aaron’s revelation transforms him from a pitiable figure into a calculating manipulator, leaving viewers questioning their judgment. The boy did not only betray the trust of his lawyer but of the viewer too.

Rose Drops Her Facade

Get Out (2017)

Ever since the beginning of Get Out, the viewer, exactly like the main character, Chris, is drawn in to attempt to understand what is going on in the story. The sinister family of his girlfriend, Rose, want something from him. There are different signals throughout the movie that appear to give subtle hints about the intentions of the people Chris is forced to spend the weekend with. Even the character of Rose occasionally raises suspicion. However, the public, once again like Chris, prefers to ignore them, which makes the famous plot twist even more shocking.

As Chris attempts to evade the house of his soon-to-be captors, the surrounding suspense arises, leading to Rose’s frantic search for the key of the car which, by the end of the scene, it is revealed had always been in her hands. Rose never cared for Chris. The movie introduces the viewer to this young and affectionate couple only to cruelly break their heart (and that of Chris) once it reveals there was no love on the girl’s behalf, only a professional interest. Although some details might have hinted at the betrayal, it was still devastating to watch.

“Go Home, Sam”

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King (2003)

One of the most loyal and noble characters in the entire history of literature is arguablly Sam Gamgee. Played by Sean Austin in the Peter Jackson adaptation of Lord of the Rings, his connection with Frodo is a beautiful representation of friendship. His commitment to helping and protecting Frodo on the hobbit’s journey to destroy the ring of Sauron is commendable. Furthermore, unlike Frodo, who gradually succumbs under his burden, Sam offers a more critical and objective insight throughout the story, especially on Gollum’s not-so-pure intention.

For all of these reasons, although it might not have been a traditional “betrayal”, Frodo’s refusal to believe his companion when Gollum attempts to put them against one another for his personal gain is painful to watch. Sam’s subsequent tears as he stumbles back down the mountain are quietly heartbreaking. After everything the duo had been together and how much he had sacrificed, Sam deserved better.

Ego Reveals His True Plan

The Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (2017)

All his life, Peter Quill craved a family. Abducted by the aliens when he was only a child after his mother tragically pᴀssed away from cancer before his astonished eyes, the beloved “Starlord”, charmingly played by Chris Pratt, deserves decent parental support and guidance. However, in the second installment of the Marvel saga, he appears to find it in the wrong person, Ego, his celestial father.

One of the big twists of the film reveals Ego’s intentions are far from noble. In a heart-shattering plot twist, the man reveals his cruel plan to use Peter’s powers to further his own selfish agenda, including the chilling confession that he caused Peter’s mother’s death. This betrayal cuts deeply because it destroys Peter’s dreams of belonging and forces him to fight the very man he had hoped to call “Dad.” Peter Quill deserved a better father, but the film underscores that he had one along along in Yondu.

Prince Hans Won’t Save Anna

Frozen (2013)

Prince Hans’s betrayal in Frozen is a groundbreaking twist for the genre. The move subverted old Disney tropes of the princess casually finding her soulmate and living happily ever after with them. Introduced as Anna’s kind and fascinating suitor, Hans appears to be an ideal match for the spirited princess. However, at the worst possible moment, when Anna asks for the true love kiss that would save her life, his true intentions come to light, revealing his plan to marry the young princess solely to seize control of Arendelle.

The betrayal shocked the audience because it went against the classic fairy tale trope of the dashing prince. Hans might appear like the hero on a white horse, but he is as much of a villain as the monster under the bed. Nevertheless, although the betrayals might still hurt, Anna appears to recover faster than the viewer and finds true love somewhere else.

The Godfather Part II (1974)

Fredo Corleone’s betrayal of his brother Michael in The Godfather Part II is one of the most devastating moments in cinematic history. Peter Pettigrew Betrays The Potters

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Few betrayals in fiction are as shocking and as heartbreaking as Peter Pettigrew’s treachery in the Harry Potter series.
