Daredevil’s Charlie Cox Reveals Which DC Character He’d Most Want to Play In James Gunn’s DCU

Marvel actor and Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox reveals which DC villain he’d want to play after the MCU’s Matt Murdock. Charlie Cox first played Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil in Netflix’s Daredevil season 1, which launched a whole Marvel subfranchise in 2015. Since then, Cox has played the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in two other seasons of his Netflix solo show, The Defenders, and two MCU cameos: Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Now, Cox’s Daredevil finally stars in his own solo series officially set in the MCU, Phase 5’s Daredevil: Born Again, where he’s set to face Kingpin, Bullseye, and Muse.

During the Daredevil: Born Again panel at FAN EXPO San Francisco 2024, Charlie Cox was asked which DC character he would be interested in portraying. Cox admitted it would be a challenge, but said that he would enjoy playing the Joker. Cox also expressed his admiration for Heath Ledger’s award-winning performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Cox’s full comments below (at the 12:19 mark):

“I wouldn’t want to take it on based on the actors you have in the past because they’re so brilliant, but I was thinking like, the Joker would be a lot of fun… If you could find a way to do something… You know, I mean, Heath Ledger for me nailed that part obviously… If you could find a new take on it in some way that would be cool.”

What Charlie Cox’s Joker Comments Could Mean For The DCU

Charlie Cox’s Only Superhero Role May Be Daredevil For The Time Being

While Charlie Cox’s acting skills could make him a good candidate for the DC role and several comic book movie actors have played multiple characters before, Cox may be too busy playing Daredevil in the MCU in the following years, as Daredevil might remain an active MCU hero until at least 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Once Daredevil’s MCU story officially comes to an end, Charlie Cox could become available for a DC role like the Joker. Still, the conditions for the Joker’s DCU casting will only be clear once the villain’s next live-action project becomes clear.

The DCU’s Joker hasn’t been cast yet, and it may take a long time for the casting process to begin. Batman is set to make his live-action DCU debut in Andy Muschietti’s the Brave and the Bold after making brief cameos in Creature Commandos episode 4 and episode 6. However, Batman’s live-action introduction doesn’t necessarily involve the Joker’s. Considering how often the Joker has appeared in DC movies, James Gunn’s DCU might wait a little longer to introduce its Clown Prince of Crime.

Our Take On Charlie Cox Wanting To Play The Joker

Charlie Cox Will Probably Explore New Aspects Of The Character In The MCU

Daredevil is quite a different character to the Joker, and Charlie Cox is unlikely to deliver a Joker-like performance in the MCU given his hero’s characterization. Nevertheless, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil will continue to evolve as he establishes himself as an MCU character. Cox’s Daredevil exhibited his lighthearted side in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, and he’s now starring in a dark and violent series immediately afterward. This huge contrast allows Charlie Cox to show off a wider range of performances — all within the MCU.
