“One Of The Coolest Brothers I’ve Met In The Film Industry:” Anthony Mackie Addresses Working With Harrison Ford on Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World’s Anthony Mackie opened up about working alongside legendary star Harrison Ford, as well as their previous time working on the same movie, Hollywood Homicide. In the upcoming MCU film, Ford plays Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk, an antagonist to Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Captain America.

Speaking with Fandango, Mackie discussed his relationship with Ford. The actor explained that they met during the filming of a film much earlier in Mackie’s career before reuniting for Captain America: Brave New World. Mackie then stated:

“This being my second time working with Harrison Ford…Harrison is probably one of the coolest brothers I’ve met in the film business, and I was surprised by that because the first movie we did together he was extremely cool.”

“So at the premiere, Harrison Ford came up and talked to me. I was like ‘yo, Indiana Jones!’ Cool, right? So when he came back and we did this, I was really surprised, like Danny always tells the story: you know we’re we’re just kicking it and usually a star of Harrison Ford’s size goes to his trailer or they put up a tent and Surround him with bubble wrap, you know. But he just came in peanut ʙuттer and jelly sandwich. [..] He never left set to do his ‘famous’ stuff. He was always one of the cast. He was always one of the actors, so it was it was never a thing of intimidation.”

“Even the first day I worked with him, I got nervous, and he pulled me to the side, and he was like ‘relax, kid.'”

For his part, director Julius Onah shared Mackie’s positive sentiments towards Ford. The filmmaker had his own memorable story featuring the Star Wars actor:

“I went over to his house to meet him in the very beginning of the process, and I was so nervous and then he just started telling the most raunchy jokes. […] Then he, you know, gave me a whiskey, and then he gave me another whiskey, and I’m like ‘I can’t keep up with this guy.’ I’m like ‘I’m a lightweight with him, but he’s just the realest, most down-to-Earth dude.”

What an honor, what a treat,” Onah concluded, expressing his excitement to work with Ford.

What Anthony Mackie’s Comments About Harrison Ford Mean

Both Onah and Mackie shared glowing praises of Ford. According to them, the actor is not just a down-to-Earth person, but an enjoyable presence on set. Ford is a veteran actor famous for his gruff demeanor; however, Mackie’s comments characterize him as much kinder. The Indiana Jones star not only sought out Mackie at a film premiere, but he also comforted the younger actor. Alternatively, Onah’s story makes Ford sound like an accessible friend.

Our Take On Anthony Mackie’s Comments About Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford's President Ross sat down in Captain America Brave New World

Mackie’s stories about Ford shed a positive light on the actor, who despite being huge celebrity, simply conducts himself as just another member of the cast. This juxtaposes with how Thunderbolt Ross carries himself, usually in a cold detached manner, though Ford has played characters with this personality type before. It will be interesting to see what Ford, who is replacing the late William Hurt as Thunderbolt Ross, will bring to Captain America: Brave New World.
