Demi Moore’s Golden Globe-Winning Horror Movie Still Dominating Streaming Charts 12 Weeks After Release

Demi Moore’s Golden Globe-winning horror movie continues dominating streaming charts, a whopping twelve weeks after release. 2025 may be Moore’s year to capture Hollywood’s biggest prize, as there is real Oscar buzz around her and her big 2024 movie. The Academy indeed has yet to bestow even a nomination upon the one-time Brat Packer, despite her occasional award-courting performances in movies like A Few Good Men, The Scarlet Letter and G.I. Jane. The Golden Globes, on the other hand, have been kinder to Moore, giving her a pair of film acting nominations, though spaced 33 years apart.

The first of those two widely-spaced Golden Globe nominations came way back in 1991, when Moore was up for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy Or Musical for her performance in Ghost. Over three decades after receiving that first recognition from the Globes, Moore was stunningly back again in 2024, thanks to her most challenging, and buzziest, role in years.

Demi Moore’s The Substance Is Still Dominating The Streaming Charts, 12 Weeks After Release

The Controversial Body Horror Film Is Streaming On Mubi

Moore’s first Golden Globes acting nomination failed to result in a trophy, but the second time proved the charm, as the star recently won Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy Or Musical for her work in the incredibly gruesome, and brilliantly satirical, body-horror opus The Substance. In addition to her Golden Globes win, Moore has nabbed nominations for the same film from the BAFTAs, the Independent Spirit Awards and SAG. Oscar nominations are set to be announced on January 23, at which time Moore may again hear her name called, ending her long wait for a bit of Academy love.

The unlikely movie that brought Moore back from the Hollywood wilderness, and may get her an Oscar nomination, stunningly continues to rack up views, as The Substance landed at #1 on the streaming movie charts for the week ending January 15, 2025 (via Reelgood). Only Netflix’s Squid Game was able to best Moore’s Golden Globe-winning film on the overall chart, even though it’s been twelve weeks since the Coralie Fargeat-directed horror-comedy first hit streaming.

Our Take On The Substance Dominating Streaming

Moore’s Film Has Put Mubi On The Map

The current top 10 streaming movie chart is predictably filled with offerings from the big services that everyone talks about. It’s strange indeed to see a film from the relatively obscure Mubi sitting in the #1 spot, with movies from Netflix, Peacock, Max, Hulu and Prime Video taking up slots 2-9. A niche service catering to fans of art films, foreign offerings and other off-beat fare, Mubi took a huge chance on The Substance, paying $12.5 million for distribution rights after Universal backed away from the Cannes Film Festival fave due to its incredibly disturbing and gruesome content.

The Substance was nominated for five Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical

Mubi’s big play paid off bigger than anyone could have expected, as The Substance went on to gross $75 million in its theatrical run, while piling up awards nominations. The niche streamer’s gain comes at the expense of Universal, who may regret their squeamishness about releasing director Fargeat’s uncompromising, wildly entertaining and gut-churningly disgusting horror masterpiece. The biggest winner of all, however, may be the movie’s star, as Moore has seen her career resurrected, with Oscar gold potentially coming her way.
