In a major escalation of the March 2026 Iran war, Iranian naval drones struck and destroyed two large oil tankers linked to U.S. interests near the southern coast of Iraq on March 17.
The vessels were attacked in the northern Persian Gulf, close to Iraq’s Al-Faw Peninsula. Dramatic footage shows powerful explosions ripping through both tankers, followed by raging fires and thick columns of black smoke rising hundreds of feet into the sky. One tanker is reported to be fully engulfed in flames and listing dangerously, while the second suffered catastrophic damage to its engine room and cargo holds.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) quickly claimed responsibility, calling the strikes “precise and successful” operations under “Operation True Promise 4.” Tehran described the tankers as “American-linked targets” and warned that more attacks on vessels supporting the U.S. and its allies are imminent as part of the “Strait of Death” campaign.
This brazen ᴀssault on commercial shipping near Iraqi waters marks a dangerous expansion of the conflict.
The attacks come just hours after an Iranian underwater drone strike killed an Indian crew member on another U.S.-operated tanker. Iraq has already shut down its southern oil ports in response to the growing threat, further тιԍнтening global oil supplies.
Oil prices surged over 10% in early trading as markets panicked over the latest disruption to energy flows out of the Gulf.
America’s response is firm and powerful.
US Central Command condemned the attacks as “acts of international piracy” and vowed swift retaliation. Despite Iran’s aggressive campaign, the dual supercarrier strike group — USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford — remains fully operational and dominant in the Arabian Sea under Operation Epic Fury. Both carriers continue launching relentless combat missions against Iranian naval ᴀssets, missile sites, and command centers.

Thousands of U.S. Marines, recently deployed by CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters, are now positioned to protect critical infrastructure and support expanded operations if required.
Gulf nations and Iraq have strongly condemned the strikes, calling them “economic terrorism” aimed at punishing countries cooperating with the US-led coalition.
Iran’s regime, weakened by the loss of Supreme Leader Khamenei and repeated heavy strikes on Tehran, is clearly trying to create maximum chaos by targeting international shipping. However, these desperate tactics are only accelerating the coalition’s determination to neutralize the threat.
The United States and its allies will not allow Iran to terrorize global energy routes. Every new attack on innocent tankers brings Tehran closer to the overwhelming response it cannot survive.
Freedom of navigation will be restored — by force if necessary.
